It’s not the gold medal that former Olympics boss and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought on the campaign trail. But his and his wife Ann’s winning of the annual Beckett Fund Canterbury Medal recognizes one element of his failed bid cheered by fans of religious freedom. “Mitt and Ann unapologetically but gracefully stood their ground and embraced their faith in the face of all manner of provocations,” says fund President Kevin “Seamus” Hasson. Fund insiders tell us that the two Mormons will be presented with the medal in May, joining other recipients like Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. Hasson says the medal goes to the “public figure who has resolutely refused to render to Caesar that which is God’s.” Romney tells us it’s an “honor to be recognized.”

Comment:

Romney!!!!
I was so excited to see someone recognize the Romneys and their graciousness! They never once said anything ugly or negative or have classes on other presidential candidates religion as one candidate did. The media was always after him too. What a gentleman and woman!!! He truly lives and believes in the freedom of religion. We all should remember that was one of the main founding principles of our nation and why our forefathers came.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR VISION AND THE ROMNEYS!

The following are remarks made by Gov. Mitt Romney at the Metropolitan Club in New York City where he accepted the Becket Fund’s Canterbury Medal for his defense of religious liberty.

Fantastik speech! He is one of the most eloquent speakers around.

I hate it when people get petty. On the townhall comments, a couple of people found fault with the “collection” part of the story. I guess it never occurred to any one of them that people often visit another church. Especially with his father’s political positions… It is so annoying that some people have to find some dumb little thing to make a big deal out of instead of just embracing all the good in a thing such as this marvelous speech!

I for one read it and thought again of what foolish America let go! I pray God finds a good way to bless us with the help of this good man!

Point #2: Ann Romney is a convert to the LDS church. That means her family i.e. mom, dad, brothers and sisters likely hold some other religiosity. It is by no means a stretch to imagine that they attended services with grandparents, cousins etc…. why are people so narrow minded in their thinking….???

Found an interesting and on topic here about Romney’s VP prospects by Kathryn Jean Lopez over at Rasmussen Reports from http://www.nationalreview.com Mitt Fanatics might enjoy the read. It might not be up yet at the link, but there’s another Romney-Religion post there now. P.S. Go McCain! from a still in the fold Romney Fanatic!

Additional comments can be found on Romney’s acceptance of the Canterbury Award by Kathryn Jean Lopez from National Review Online (Her article also includes John McCain’s remarks on religion he made on Wed.):

Ahhh, the Romney’s are a refreshing breeze in our political picture. During this election, as we take stock of where our nation has come from and where it’s heading, Mitt’s speech deserves more than a quick reading. It deserves contemplation.

  6. Lee Ann Says:

It was Mitt Romney’s speech in December on “Faith In America” that won my support. And he just keeps being a man of honor and integrity and continues to be one class act for sure. We love ya Mitt and Ann!!!!

  7. Lori Says:

Reading Romney’s Beckett Fund speech makes me miss him in the campaign sooooo much. How did we lose with such a fine man, a thoughtful, spiritual, intelligent man, and a patriot? I’m getting melancholy just thinking about it again.

  8. Paulee&Mike Says:

It doesn’t matter what he does, he is so very polished. He has so much natural ability.
I have never been disappointed, only in that he won’t be our beloved President!!!!
He knew Washington was broken, he is right!!!!! Now what ?????? There is a saying:
If you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what
you have always gotten, is that enough????? It was time for Mitt!!!!!!!

  9. 2thepoint Says:

    You’re right, Paulee.

Here’s another way to put it: If you keep using the same old ingredients, you’ll keep getting the same old cake!

Here’s an excerpt from Townhall.com written by Matt Lewis (blogger/contributing writer/ frequent political commentator, appearing on MSNBC, Fox News and CNN):

“And if anyone doubts Huckabee’s penchant for self-promotion, the former governor also recently announced he was writing a book about his failed presidential campaign.

But the VP race is only one facet of the ongoing Romney/Huckabee grudge match. Each aims to establish himself as the leader of the conservative movement to set himself up for future presidential bids, as Ronald Reagan did after narrowly losing the 1976 Republican nomination to President Gerald Ford. Republicans have a penchant for nominating candidates who have run before — twice before, in some cases (Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole and Richard Nixon).

Romney, 61, and Huckabee, 52, are both in the prime of their political lives. Both came essentially out of nowhere to run highly respectable campaigns. Barring some seismic shift, it is conceivable these two will once again face off, be it in 2012 or in 2016.”

It WAS time for Mitt. McCain knew it was HIS “last hurrah” at trying for the White House so he affixed himself to Huckabee like grease on a french fry and, together, they moved our man, Mitt, off the menu!

Mitt’s true colors continue to shine and Romney will be back with more accomplishments to recommend him.

  10. John Cronin Says:

    2thepoint,

Well said. I think you hit the nail on the head with your comments about McCain & Huckabee tag teaming to biff Gov. Romney out of the nomination. Based on what I hear from various political sources, the Republican nomination may not be worth the powder to blow it out the front door in 2008. Baring some cosmic shifts in the political landscape, this election cycle doesn’t look too promising for the GOP.

  11. Paulee&Mike Says:

    2thepoint and all fiends here,
I love your quote, thanks, not heard that one. Again, I fully agree. Huck folks all say,
no, they didn’t double team Mitt. Give me a break. They absolutely knew Mitt was the man to beat. We the people saw it with our own eyes. It’s the bully game, we’ll be buddies and team tag the popular kid on the block, make him look bad. That they
did, but Mitt is a survivor. Cream rises to the top.I have confidence Mitt will land
favorably, just not sure where. Look around, who is as good as he is??????
Well, guys the Bush administration had 7 years, we need people who act, not react!!!!
Don’t get me wrong, like Bush, I understand the problems, now people want change.
We can’t solve what has been done, someone has to sell the people of this great land,
Tax and spend, more government in our business, etc. etc. is not the way to go.
Mccain has to show the Mccain spirit that got him through his darkest days!!!!!
Stop the low profile attitude, liven up, convince this country you are the best candidate.
HAPPY MOM’S DAY TO ALL!!!!!!!!!! ENJOY!!!!! GOD BLESS!!!!
