McCain Flying Solo In Vice Presidential Search

May 3rd, 2008 Posted in George W. Bush, John McCain

According to CBS News when John McCain convenes a meeting of his VP search committee, he automatically has a quorum and a majority since he is the sole member of said committee.

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Dick Cheney headed up the search for George W. Bush’s running mate – and eventually settled on himself.

The person running the vice presidential search for presumptive GOP nominee John McCain won’t have that option – since, the Chicago Tribune reports, it’s McCain himself who’s handling the job.

Oh well, I guess that means he’ll choose Lieberman.

Tonight they were parading a new econmic advisor to Mccain, she was CEO of HP.
HEWLARD PACKARD, says she was fired!!!! Also asked if she is being considered
for vp? Another turn in the Mccain thought process. She’s been vetted????? Here we go again .Honestly, folks, I’m beginning to think Romney just keeps getting name recognition for 2012. Looking more like Ronald Regan’s stategy all the time. It could be worse. Sorry, I didn’t catch her name, watch for her , she is traveling with him. If I were him, I’d be careful after that New York Times article. He must have a plan.

    Paulee&Mike,

Carly Fiore? She was fired….didn’t make her numbers.

  4. Chris Says:

Mike and Paulee. I think your right. McCain would be a fool not to pick someone of Romney’s quality. But then, what is often mistaken for ‘humility’ in McCain is actually the arrogance of the fighter pilots I knew in the military.

Perhaps we once again need to go through the refiners fire with a very liberal presient hose and Senate. Think about it. In 2 years, after paying out the nose for gas, food and homes, we the voters will revolt, sending a majority into the House and Senate. Then in 2012, the hatchet falls again, and we end up with President Romney. This can all be avoided if Romney is the Veep. He can at least make the weak McCain LOOK strong.

…sorry about the last posting folks. I have two problems going on here. A keyboard that sticks, and a brain that moves faster than my flying fingers.

Just heard Shepard Smith on Fox News report that Bill Crystal (op-ed comunist for New York Times) has authored piece out today stating that McCain is considering Bobby Jindal for VP posistion - said McCain staffers had mentioned Jindal’s name four times in conversations last week. Here’s some of what the article says (see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/opinion/05kristol.html?_r=1&oref=slogin):

“Another McCain staffer called my attention to this finding in the latest Fox News poll: McCain led Obama in the straight match-up, 46 to 43. Voters were then asked to choose between two tickets, McCain-Romney vs. Obama-Clinton. Obama-Clinton won 47 to 41.

That reversal of a three-point McCain lead to a six-point deficit for the McCain ticket suggests what might happen (a) when the Democrats unite, and (b) if McCain were to choose a conventional running mate, who, as it were, reinforced the Republican brand for the ticket. As the McCain aide put it, this is what will happen if we run a traditional campaign; our numbers will gradually regress toward the (losing) generic Republican number.

Maybe that’s why, in separate conversations last week, no fewer than four McCain staffers and advisers mentioned as a possible vice-presidential pick the 36-year-old Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal. They’re tempted by the idea of picking someone so young, with real accomplishments and a strong reformist streak.

It might also be a way to confront the issue of McCain’s age (71), which private polls and focus groups suggest could be a real problem. A Jindal pick would implicitly acknowledge the questions and raise the ante. The message would be: “You want generational change? You can get it with McCain-Jindal — without risking a liberal and inexperienced Obama as commander in chief.” I would add that it was after McCain spent considerable time with Jindal in New Orleans recently, and reportedly found him, as he has before, personally engaging and intellectually impressive, that the campaign’s informal name-dropping of Jindal began.”

Bobby Jindal is focused on the problems in Louisiana. He’s young, an up-and-comer, but lacks the proven experience and know-how of Mitt Romney.

McCain’s one-man VP search committee… pretty big decision to make with only one distracted brain working on it.

    Who knows?

  7. 2thepoint Says:

It’s Bill Kristol - not Crystal - thinking of someone else!

I just wanted to add the Bill Kristol has never been a Romney fan. Always very dismissive of Mitt and speaks of Romney with thinly-veiled denigration. Working for NY Times says it all.

Rootin’ for ROMNEY for… whatever, whenever!

  8. Mit 10 Says:

Kristol always annoyed me when Mitt Romney was running for President. I am no longer a Fox fan. I just never thought they were fair and balanced when it came to Romney.

McCain took a day off from campaigning. I get the impression he will be a lazy President. Romney would work so hard to get America on track and would have fought hard to make things right for all Americans. I just don’t get that vibe from McCain.

McCain is to arrogant to listen to other people opinions and he holds grudges. The GOP did not speak out against McCain and seemed to take the attitude that it was his turn and now look at the mess we are in.

I just don’t know what the future holds for Romney. The next several years are going to be a mess. If you think it is bad now it could be a whole lot worse once Hillary, Obama, or McCain takeover. Fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your wallets cause we are in for a wild ride.

  9. Doria/Texas Says:

It’s Carly Fiorina, former CEO of HP. She is the new Victory Chairperson of the RNC. I read an article that her job right now is to advocate on behalf of John McCain and the RNC, to get him elected President of the USA. I know the she is one of several possible candidates for the VP. Hopefully, Senator McCain will do the ‘right’ thing and offer the VP to Governor Mitt. It’s the only way to unite the Republican Party in 2008.

  10. bigmo Says:

We should be so lucky if McCain turns out to be a “lazy” president. I hope he’s not actively out there trying to get his agenda enacted…he’s wrong on so many issues. He just happens to be a somewhat better option than Obama or Clinton, unless he picks some liberal as a VP, in which case it wouldn’t be just the next 4-8 years we would have to worry about it. If McCain doesn’t demonstrate a willingness to work with conservatives by choosing a conservative VP, I don’t think I can vote for him. There are always third parties.

  11. Chris Says:

McCain won’t have that chance to be a lazy president, if he picks someone with zero experience like Jindal (whom I like, just not for veep stardom yet), or someone with baggage like Fiorina. Personally, unless Mitt is on the ticket, I’m less inclined to vote, no matter who he picks.
