McCain Offers Market-Based Health Plan

April 30th, 2008 Posted in Health Care, Healthcare, John McCain, Mitt Romney

In my opinion, McCain’s stance on market based, portable, individual health insurance coverage shows the continuing influence of Gov. Romney on his campaign.

McCain has taken several pages from the Romney playbook. McCain is fortunate to have Romney’s past success in crafting market-based health insurance for Massachusetts available to help him formulate policies that will benefit all Americans.

TAMPA, April 29 – Sen. John McCain on Tuesday rejected calls by his Democratic opponents for universal health coverage, instead offering a market-based solution with an approach similar to a proposal put forth by President Bush last year.
This Story

McCain’s belief in the power of the free market to meet the nation’s health-care needs sets up a stark choice for voters this fall in terms of the care they could receive, the role the government would play and the importance they place on the issue

In a speech at a cancer research center here, McCain dismissed his rivals’ proposals for universal health care as riddled with “inefficiency, irrationality and uncontrolled costs.” He said the 47 million uninsured Americans will get coverage only when they are freed from the shackles of the current employer-dominated system.

Sounds like in is taking a bit of Romney advise? This has Mitts fingerprints all over it. Good or bad sign?

TH’s Amanda Capenter has a nice veep thread going. The usual mis-information and Huck payrollee’s are out if force, but posting of any good, honest information is a good way to counter the punching.

  2. John Cronin Says:

Good sign if it means McCain has totally and irrevocably repented of his past liberal leaning ways and now buys in to Romney’s market based solutions.

Bad sign if it means he will choose Mitt as VP and then take a left turn once he thinks he’s got his right flank covered.

  3. Peter Combes Says:

Right John. Hate to see Mitt be the victim of McCain’s tactics again.

But, maybe that’s too negative. I’ll keep an eye open either way. If McCain is learning, changing, becoming Presidential material, the better for all of us. I hope so. We’ll find out.

    But if it’s a sham ……. hope it doesn’t splash on Mitt. - P

  4. Tami Says:

I hope he’s not just using Mitt but I then again, I would think Mitt is smarter than to let that happen. I hope it means that there’s something good in the works behind the scenes!!

  5. Paulee&Mike Says:

How real is that GOP poll? Huck is skunking Mitt! I’m amazed. You can’t vote more than once, unless they have found a way around that as well.
I agree, Mitt has to beware. I can’t wait to see the three of them together. Mccain, Huck, and Mitt. Mitt and Mccain have done fine, usually three is a crowd, esp. when
your as needy as Huck is. I heard Joe Scarborough say Mitt would be great in two other roles : Economic Advisor, Sec. of the Treasury. What do you all think of that???

  6. Tami Says:

Interesting article I just found. I especially like the second to the last paragraph :)

I think Mitts people have jobs. He was not far behind last night. I don’t think hucks folks have real jobs. That’s just my opinion.

  8. Tami Says:

I’m LIVID!!! I just went to the gop poll to see how it was going and my LONG post from last night is GONE!! I am MittFanInIdaho in case anyone read it. It’s gone. Poof!! How unfair is that?!?! I have it saved in a word document and I’m about to post it there again. I’m so mad!!!!!!

Huckabee fans playing fair is never going to happen. They have learned from their master.

I don’t know if it would be a good idea for Romney to be JM VP but I just know I would feel like I had a ticket I could support this fall.

I feel doubtful that John McCain would ever give Romney any credit.

Tami, that was an enjoyable article! I DID read your post on GOP last night; too bad it’s gone today. Ironically, having it erased can be seen in a good light - shows that the poll is monitored and controlled by CHEATS. Like Mama used to say - cheaters never prosper!

I like the fact that, while Governor of MA, Romney not only offered a vision of private, market-based health insurance to the people, he DID the gruelling work of putting together a viable, effective plan to insure all Massachusettians, WITHOUT taxing anyone! I venture to say that very few Americans, outside of MA, knew that he had accomplished such an amazing feat . He didn’t politicize it - just got the job done. The first most of us learned of his insurance solution for MA was after he declared his candidacy for president.

Only someone with Romney’s intelligence/capitalist understanding/compassion/ability to foster teamwork/experience/leadership could have created such a practical solution for the needs of MA citizens.

Mitt Romney is a reservoir of untapped treasure. It’s time for John McCain to back the BRINKS truck up the Romney driveway, open the door for Mitt with a sweeping bow, and transport him to all the way to the White House!

  11. Tami Says:

Thanks 2thepoint, and yes you are right - The GOP board is obviously controlled by chaters! Ugh…. and also, what a great post of yours here. Very well written and worded. Just curious… are you from MA? Sounds as if you are.

  12. 2thepoint Says:

    Tami,
Thanks for your kind words. No, I not from the great Bay State, MA. I’m holding down one of the few conservative outposts here in shakin’ ‘n bakin’ southern California! :)

I’ve been following Mitt since his pre-Olympic days - knew he was a rising star waaaay when. He just gets the job done, without any thought to who gets the credit! I was so impressed with Mitt’s campaign when he ran for Gov of MA - his class and dignity (that was one tough run) - and saw him demonstrate the makings of a president.

How are things in Idaho? Are your fellow Idahoans interested in the VP slot and what’s the buzz there?

I just heard Bill O’Reily tell Shepard Smith on Fox News that he believes Mitt Romney would be the best VP for McCain - because of the economy! Pretty good stuff, coming from him. Shepard then replied that Romney was going to be on the Fox Report tomorrow! Tune in, everybody - things are getting interesting!

  13. Tami Says:

Oh!!! I gotta watch the Fox Report… can’t remember what time that comes on. Hmmm… That’s great you’ve been watching Mitt since that long. LOL @ shakin’ ‘n bakin’ southern California!

I don’t hear a lot of the buzz here in Idaho but in my general neighborhood here, Mitt seems to be a favorite. Other than I have seen a couple Ron Paul signs in yards LOL

  14. Peter Combes Says:

Currently reading “Turnaround”. It’s by Governor Romney about how the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City was saved. Goes into the step by step analysis of how he defines a problem, motivates people, and goes about solving the problem.

In this case, the problem was ridden with scandal and in the red with no chance of recovery so they called him. His response was “Why would I want to do that?” But they didn’t go to Mitt directly, they went through Ann and she helped him decide why he would want to do it. The Olympics went off beautifully and in the black.

It was another of those service to mankind and his country that he is becoming famous for. Hope more people realize it soon. Also hope there is enough to work with when he is able to get his hands on the problems.

Mitt Romney is a gift to the world. There are however a lot of people who don’t want him to fix it. Go Mitt. - P

  15. Tami Says:

Is “Turnaround” a book he wrote? If so, I didn’t realize he had one out!

  16. 2thepoint Says:

Mitt Romney truly did the impossible by saving the Olympic games in Salt Lake City. Through the overwhelming, difficult challenges of cleaning up a HUGE mess that he did not create, he ended up clearing a profit of $100 million for the games.

A relatively unknown fact is that Romney gave a million of his own money to the games and donated his $825,000 CEO salary to charity! AND, we often forget that Mitt had the GREAT CHALLENGE of ensuring the safety of the games right after September 11, 2001 (coordinated a $300 million security budget). I’ll NEVER forget, on the night of the opening ceremonies, the thrill of seeing Romney, Pres. Bush, and Olympic president Jacques Rogge walk onto the stage and watching as the tattered, scorched United States flag - that flew at Ground Zero - was ceremoniously carried into the stadium. I was so proud to be an American!

On another note, while doing the grueling work of turning Massachusetts around, he DID NOT accept a salary while serving as Governor of that state.

This guy is the real deal, people.

  17. Paulee&Mike Says:

Amazing stuff, everyone. Let’s face it he is an amazing person. I get goosebumps
when like you, 2thepoint I remember the opening ceremony of the olympics, the story
he tells about the young man, skater, and how the wind went under the flag as they
were carrying into the stadium!!!!!!!How can we not see that as a sign from above?????? Mitt needs to prevail, he’s not a quitter, and he himself says he hates
to loose. He is too good not to have a place in this government, and now that we are all about this horrible economic mess, Let’s hope they open their eyes and minds and
do what is right for this country. They know his abilities, we just have a click trying
to keep it the same, no one likes change, it scares most. Don’t forget, congress
has so much say over all. Let’s get Rep. back!!!!!!!! Vote R’s
All is a go for convention, I’ll be in touch, working on lots, trying to pull strings and get as close to Governor Romney as WE CAN!
Wish us luck , Mainely yours
