Postive News Out of Iraq from Angelina Jolie

This definitely falls into the “Conservative File”. HT: To the hubby

Normally when you hear about anything from Hollywood and the Iraq war it’s all negative, but this positive story written by Angelina Jolie bucks that trend. What great news!

From the story:

My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?

What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance. UNHCR has appealed for $261 million this year to provide for refugees and internally displaced persons. That is not a small amount of money — but it is less than the U.S. spends each day to fight the war in Iraq. I would like to call on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy.

As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.

It seems to me that now is the moment to address the humanitarian side of this situation. Without the right support, we could miss an opportunity to do some of the good we always stated we intended to do.

A very interesting article. I have no idea what Angelina Jolie’s political association (if any) is, but she certainly seems to bypass politics to what is far more important.

Angelina Jolie is scheduled to star in Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” coming out some time this year. It should be very interesting to see how true to the book the movie turns out to be. Written in 1957 it was a prophetic glimpse at the direction we appear to be taking. - P

Angelina Jolie just gained a large amount of respect from me. An actress of her caliber and popularity to go against the all too familiar mantra of Hollywood is amazing. She is honest in what she sees and what she’s asking of the candidates. Refreshing to say the least.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that about her. I thought because she’s with Brad Pitt whose liberal leanings are well-documented, she’d go the way most Hollywood people would. It’s refreshing that she goes by what she’s observed and spoke her mind fearlessly and eloquently. I hope that our presidential nominees will take heed and do something about the problem. A weak Iraq would be a threat to our national security.

Wow, good news! Thank you to Angelina for bringing to light the positive that is going on. All we ever hear is the negative. Good for her stepping up to the plate and giving us some truth on the situation. God bless our military, those who are serving. And God bless President Bush. They say it takes about 20 years before a President’s legacy is really known. I have no doubt Bush will have a great legacy. Someone said > oh yea he will be praised for Iraq, etc. and then the Democrats will step up and say it was their idea…lol……sigh.

My husband asked me who was one of my favorite actresses when we were at Blockbusters yesterday and I told him it was Angelina Jolie. I read this about her and I feel that way even more!!! She is really terrific. She seems to be very kind, and compassionate. A good woman. Way to go Angelina, you are setting a very good example of the kind of celebs that young ladies should look up to. Your not just another pretty face, you are as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside. I cannot say that about most of the celebs, male or female.
