John McCain Hates Me
Michael Reagan:
Until last night, when I watched the Republican debate, I had no idea how much John McCain dislikes me and just about everybody else but Rudy Giuliani, who if you believe The New York Times is a pretty good hater himself.
As I watched McCain and Governor Romney go at it during the debate at the Reagan Library I was struck by the huge gap that separates McCain — whose contempt for his fellow humans is patently obvious — and my dad, Ronald Reagan, who had nothing but the deepest affection and respect for the American people.
The feeling is mutual between McCain and me. I don’t like the way he treats people. You get the impression that he thinks everybody is beneath him. He seems to be saying, “I was a war hero, and you had damn well better treat me as your superior.”
He has contempt for conservatives who he thinks can be duped into thinking he’s one of them, despite such blatantly anti-conservative actions as his support for amnesty for illegal immigrants, his opposition to the Bush tax cuts which got the economy rolling again, and his campaign finance bill which skewed the political process and attacked free speech.
I am appalled by his contempt for the intelligence of his listeners when he flat-out lies and expects them to believe what he says even when the truth is staring them in the face.
A prime example cited by columnist Robert Novak was McCain’s denial that he had privately suggested that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was too conservative, insisting that he recalled saying no such thing, adding that Alito was a “magnificent” choice.
“In fact,” wrote Novak, “multiple sources confirm that the senator made negative comments about Alito nine months ago.”
In last night’s debate, McCain stubbornly defended his charge, false on the face of it, that Romney wanted a deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
“I have never, ever supported a specific timetable” for withdrawing troops, Romney said, adding that McCain’s accusation on the eve of Tuesday’s primary “sort of falls into the dirty tricks that I think Ronald Reagan would have found reprehensible.”
What Romney said last April, was merely that U.S. and Iraqi leaders “have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about” in private, which in no way suggests he was in any sense talking about troop withdrawals.
Despite the evidence, McCain charged that “of course he said he wanted a timetable” for a withdrawal, even though he had never said any such thing. It was McCain daring to ask us if we wanted to believe our lying eyes or his demonstrably false allegation.
McCain must think conservatives are dumb enough to allow him to get away with claiming he’s one of them. This is from a man who opposed drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and who twice voted against President Bush’s tax cuts and sponsored the campaign-finance reform legislation that Romney claimed “took a whack at the First Amendment.”
In John McCain’s eyes, conservatives are the Viet Cong of this generation and he treats us as such. It’s either his way or no way.
I despise his habit of talking down to us, like a wise father to an idiot son. He’s just at a loss to understand why everybody doesn’t grovel at his feet and accept his every word as wisdom handed down from his lofty perch atop Mt. Olympus.
I can’t help it. I know in my heart he hates me, and every conservative. If he gets the nomination the only way he could win against Hillary or Barack Obama would be to be part of a McCain-Limbaugh ticket.
Michael Reagan, the eldest son of Ronald Reagan, is heard daily by over 5 million listeners via his nationally syndicated talk radio program, “The Michael Reagan Show.”
This is some pretty powerful language. Michael Reagan is one of many conservatives who sees Republicans making a huge mistake by supporting John McCain. Governor Romney is buying ads in key states and is fighting to the finish. Let’s continue to fight for him.

I thought that the speech given by President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman) in the movie Independence Day would be appropriate. I’ve made some changes to fit us Romney supporters:
Good evening. In less than a week, we along with others Super Tuesday voters will join together. And we will be voting in the most important election in the history of mankind. “Mankind.” That word should have new meaning for all of us on February fifth. Republicans we can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that in less than a week it will be February fifth, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from John McCain. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win that day, the Fifth of February will no longer be known as Super Tuesday, but as the day the Republican Party declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate President Mitt Romney!

We love you Mitt. We are behind you to the end. And if by some odd chance you are NOT the nominee on the “Republican” ballot, I will still write your name in as a “write-in” in November. God Speed.

Great article!! Matches a lot of my sentiments very well.
(But correct the spelling of “Regan” to “Reagan,” the spelling of this name is particulary important:)

Did anyone catch the O’Reilly Factor today? Bill is off his rocker. He said McCain has toughened his immigration stance, he thinks McCain will lean further right in the general (than he did in the Republican primary?!) and the thinks McCain will pick Romney as his running mate. I wonder if Bill is feeling ok. That was a whole lot of nonsense.

I’ve stopped watching cable news. The bias is sickening and it’s not good for my emotional, mental or physical health.
The only good thing about Romney not being our nominee is that I will lose heart for politics and finally get some work done.
My feeling is that if the GOP doesn’t nominate Romney, then they will get what they deserve — and don’t blame me — I VOTED FOR ROMNEY!!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Yes, caught O’Reilly. Pure BS. Monica Crowley was a disappointment as well.
As always, Rick Santorum was outstanding!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Bill O’Reilly also thinks that everyone will rally around McCain if he is the Republican nominee. I have heard too many people say they cannot under any circumstances bring themselves to vote for McCain. This idea that McCain can win against the democrats is flawed if a large number of Republicans can’t stomach voting for him. I am currently listening to the Democratic Debate. I don’t agree with his stands, but I would rather give my vote to Obama who appears to at least have a reasoned approach to things. Rick Santorum said tonight that McCain is unpredictable. That is what I have found. There is no way to even guess how he will stand on any given issue. There are many voices out now crying the alarm–good for Michael Reagan–we need to get louder NOW–we don’t have much time.

Mr. Romney,
I am writing to strongly encourage you to drop out of the Presidential primary race and endorse Governor Mike Huckabee. At this point, realistically, you are very unlikely to garner more support and delegates than Senator McCain. Even if you were to do so, a huge percentage of American voters will refuse to vote for you (as, indeed, they will if John McCain wins) because they perceive you to be “not conservative enough”, and the Democratic candidate (whoever it may be) will end up winning the election. However, if you back Mr. Huckabee, and he wins the primary, your influence with more moderate citizens his with conservative and Christian voters, would be a huge force to be reckoned with, especially since it is this conservative block that is largely responsible for President Bush’s reelection in 2004. The liberal media understands this, and, therefore, how dangerous Mike Huckabee’s candidacy would be for the Democratic Party, which is why their tactics during the past few weeks have been to smear, distort, downplay or completely ignore him. Please take this into consideration and do not allow this to happen to our country. We cannot afford to lose the White House this year. Do the right thing for America.

Lisa, you are backing an unethical, chronic-lying liberal. Yes, that is what Mike Huckabee is.
Go Mitt!
January 31st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Lisa,
You have to analyze that fact that Romney is the more favorable choice across a larger population segment than Huckabee. Logic, rather than emotion, dictates that Huckabee should join the Romney camp and unite the conservatives so we can both beat McCain.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
He (Michael Reagan) should get Nancy to endorse Romney before it is too late.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Lisa,
Why don’t you ask Gov. Huckabee to drop out and endorse Gov. Romney. Gov Romney has more delegates and is clearly the more favored of the two. Huckabee needs to ask his people to back Romney. But if Huckabee was to drop out, more then likely he would back McCain anyway because we have all heard that you can not vote for a Mormon. Pleasssssse!!!!!
January 31st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Lisa,
I believe Huckabee is a nice man, but he is not competent to be the President of the United States. He is a typical Southern Democrats/the old blue dog, now they call themselves “REPUBLICAN”. He is also an anti-business man like John McCain, and you can see this pattern very clear from last night debate. If either Huckabee or John MaCain gets nominated, it would destroy the Republican first before going to national election. The core value of the conservative is pro-business, pro-personal freedom, small government, lower taxes and strong national defense. Huckabee always talks those kitchen issues which demonstrate that he has no version where this country needs to be in 21st century. He is just a farmer raised from a chicken farm with no version for the future at all. He is such a dumb and still calculating that McCain would offer him a VP if he stays in this race. American needs a President like Romney who knows how capital works when the country is in the transformation into a global economy. Please ask Huckabee to quit and conservative will appreciate him forever.

Ann Colter on Hannity ….said she will vote and support Hillary if McCain is the Nom. Newt said we have to support him due to the judges…No we don’t. I’m with Ann …all women get behind Hillary she can’t do anymore damage than McCain and at least the damage will be done by a DEMOCRATE.
February 1st, 2008 at 12:12 am
If Hillary and McCain each get the nomination will there be a need for debates this fall? I mean we all know that once Hillary gets the nomination she will admit the surge is working and that we should not pull or troops out. So what will be left for her and McCain to discuss at a debate? The weather? Or are we goint to just listen to one or 2 hours of Sen MacCain saying “I agree with Sen. Clinton” and Hillary saying “I agree with Sen McCain.”
February 1st, 2008 at 12:14 am
Lisa,
I understand how it feels to be passionate about a candidate, but my reading of Huckabee is that he has made himself soley a niche candidate. His niche, of course, is the evangelical wing of the republican party - and he doesn’t even have a majority of that wing. If we are going to come together under a conservative candidate, at this point, it’s going to have to be Romney - he has a much broader base than Huckabee and is actually considered more conservative.
I hope that you will do some further research on Romney (this site has tons of good info), and decide to join us as Romney/conservative supporters. We could certainly use your passion and your voice among your friends.
Also….I agree with those of you who would not vote for McCain if he got the nomination. Along with not agreeing with McCain on key issues, his temper tells me he is a loose cannon, and that worries me.

Wow, Lisa knows how to cut and paste. Aren’t we all impressed. Thats the kind of original thinking that we’ve come to expect on this blog. “Now stare a the shiny ball and repeat after me: suppport Huckabee…”
Nice try. Next…

Hey, don’t miss cut and paste Lisa talking to herself in this post on this site:

Forget Huckabee… He is more of a comedian than presidential! GO MITT!
February 1st, 2008 at 1:31 am
The good news is that unlike any Democrat running McCain is pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, against torture, and for winning the War on Terror.’ True enough. Also, having McCain as the nominee really ticks off all the people that unfairly trashed Huckabee (Rush, Mark Levin, et. al.). It may not be enough to ease my discomfort over McCain, but it nevertheless brings me great pleasure.
Win or Lose Go Huckabee!
February 1st, 2008 at 1:58 am
I have to agree about McCain… if he gets the nomination i am voting democrat. McCain lied to the people of Florida to win that state. If I voted for him in the general election it would be like saying that what he did was right. I will do whatever I can to keep him from winning the general election.
The harsh reality is that Hillary may very well be LESS liberal than a John McCain in the white house. He would open the borders to Mexico and finally pass his amnesty plan.
Until then, lets back Mitt with all our hearts and give it a spirited fight. I definitely think Mitt can win and will back him with my support.
GO MITT!!!
February 1st, 2008 at 12:57 pm
If Mitt Romney is not nominated, I will not vote… John MCcain is too old, a lier, flp fopper
& defiitely he does not belong in the white house, People wake up! he is a liberal running on conservate ideas. It will be a sad day for many of us… Hopefully, voters will come to their senses, & vote for the right man MITT ROMNEY!!!!
February 1st, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I have to agree that Mitt is the one who should go. He and McCain may tie on dishonesty but Mitt has him beat with unethical campaign tactics. Without his money and media suport,he would have been long gone. I could not vote for Mitt even to save the world from”democrats”. We need a candidate who will take our country in a starkly different direction. (McCain doesn’t work either.)
