Do independents want a moderate or someone who is competent?

January 31st, 2008 Posted in McCain, Moderates

The fact that McCain agrees with the democrats on campaign finance will not help him. Moderates don’t jut want democrats and republicans to come together so they can smile for the cameras. They want republicans and democrats to work together to produce legislation that actually fixes the problems. The problem with McCain isn’t that he is too liberal, its that he is incompetent. Every bill that has his name on it, has done the exact opposite of what it promised it would do. McCain-Feingold had the exact opposite effect: there is more dirty money that is not transparent now than ever.

You know how Bush coined the phrase, “compassionate conservative.” I would love to have Romney use the words “competent conservative.” Its not just about saying that you have compassion, or saying that you are a conservative, its about accomplishing something that is able to deliver compassion in a conservative manner. Any of this talk, I’m sorry to say, is many levels over McCain’s head. All that matters to him is working with the other side, not actually fixing problems. That’s what happens when you look at the world from behind a committee, and that is why we don’t elect senators to be presidents.

Isn’t it time to start talking and planning for a THIRD PARTY. And who better to lead it and take up the fight than MITT ROMNEY? Isn’t the message already loud and clear that he stands not to be appreciated and, in fact, to be undermined by the very same Washington insiders whom he wants to scatter into the hinterlands. Isn’t it clear that a campaign with two nearly identical candidates, McCain and Hillary, would be a wide opening for a conservative campaign. This is the year a THIRD PARTY just might prevail.

I have not known about Mitt for more than a year, when I first saw him on CSPAN articulately expounding on his health care scheme. I am, by the way, not a Mormon, and not even an active religious person. But I have not supported a Democrat since, as a teenager, I worked for JFK.

BUT, if McCain wins the Republican nomination, and the Republican Party allows itself to have been “destroyed” and “neutered” by the Mainstream Media [because that's just what the situation will have been if McCain prevails], I will NOT vote for McCain or even work for McCain. In fact, if it comes down to it, I might even vote for Obama over McCain. McCain is too much of a mental case, a degenerate, lying sleaze, the worst of the old Washington Politics and the disease which afflicts our nation.

Yet, if there were a third Party…of a conservative stripe….I would vote for that Party and frankly I believe that a Third Party could actually win an election against the other two, if it were Hillary and McCain. Anyway, that is the only scenario whereby I would not have been totally disenfranchised by the Mainstream Media.

I would love to see Mitt Romney, if he doesn’t prevail in the Republican Primary, run as an Independent. He has the organization, he has the resources, he has the name recognition and he has a large core of Conservative Americans with no place to go. Just a fantasy, you say. But stranger things have happened.

What does he need in order to achieve that? It’s very simple. All he needs is a couple of first group and website to emerge somewhere in the US, a simple political group and announce that they will seek to draft him, to encourage him to run as an Independent if McCain wins, because they cannot stomach McCain. This group will get endless free press and publicity and coverage….and it will be a constant reminder to all Republicans that McCain is an anathema and that his nomination will destroy the party. That is all that is required…and, of course, would have to set itself up and operate independently of the Romney campaign, just a grass roots movement urging him to stay in the race,….ALL THE WAY. The firestorm of press attention plus a good website to solicit contributions would immediately attract millions of Conservatives

Please think about this, folks. It IS an option. And one which can be easily done. Astonishingly easy to do. If things don’t work out for Mitt after Super Tuesday, that group could be up and running and with millions of dollars of financing in a week or two…..

Mike, good thought. It would be better if we could establish Governor Romney as a “consistent competent conservative.” or perhaps, “A trusted leader of consistent conservative values.” The McCain labeling of GR as a flip-flopper and unreliable politician without core principles as been too succesful. Something needs to be done to invalidate that myth and to tie together Mitt’s consistent conservative record on key issues.

I was watching Hannity & Comes on the eve of the Florida Primary and they had Chuck Norris as their guest. Chuck ripped into Mitt as someone who could not be trusted, etc. Allen also stated in effect: “That Romney has been on both sides of every major issue, abortion, gay rights, immigration, the war, etc.” I was struck by the fact that Sean Hannity was speechless and did not know how to respond to this line of attack.

Sean meekly looked at Chuck Norris and said something like, “Hasn’t Mike Huckabee changed his stance on immigration.” Here’s my point, if Sean Hannity cannot or has not assimilated the correct information in order to set the record straight, how can we expect the average undecided voter to see through that negative assessment of Mitt?

Perception of what is largely a myth, namely that GR cannot be trusted as a conservative, has become a reality in large measure because of the McCain strategy. There should be a way to tie in past record positions with current campaign positions, except for right to life (and even that can be handled to some extent) with effective advertising.

I thought that the speech given by President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman) in the movie Independence Day would be appropriate. I’ve made some changes to fit us Romney supporters:

Good evening. In less than a week, we along with others Super Tuesday voters will join together. And we will be voting in the most important election in the history of mankind. “Mankind.” That word should have new meaning for all of us on February fifth. Republicans we can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that in less than a week it will be February fifth, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from John McCain. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win that day, the Fifth of February will no longer be known as Super Tuesday, but as the day the Republican Party declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate President Mitt Romney!

I just opened my Yahoo home page and under “In the News” was a link to a video under this title:

Will Romney ever rid himself of the flip-flopper label?

The Governor comports himself well in this interview but he does not have enough time to literally address all of the issues, one by one, that are relevant to this campaign. I still think that needs to be done.

  5. MLD Says:

A third party? Maybe. But wouldn’t a write-in campaign be less costly? Or rather, wouldn’t the costs that would go towards setting up a new party be better used in PR and advertising to get the core conservatives to vote for GMR?

  6. Kathleen West Says:

If money can be raised for a third party run, where is it now???? If there could be a ground swell for Romney as a third party candidate, let’s see it now-in the next week. Let’s see the money roll in right now. We certainly can’t expect Mitt Romney to continue to spend his hard earned money in our behalf. Let’s prevail now within the two party system–get that money in. Get that website up and a hundred more. Call those talk shows. If not McCain–it has to be Romney–make them say it. This is like a bad dream where you find yourself in the right and no one will listen. Romney can win–Huckabee is taking some of his votes but he is also taking delegates away from McCain. It is complicated enough and people are angry enough at McCain–Romney is the answer.

As we look around and see more and more people recoiling in horror at the prospect of Clinton-McCain race for 7 or 8 long dreary months, people will see the choices more clearly…and then there will be a chance for a strong conservative leader [Mitt?] to announce himself. In the case of GMR, he already has a national organization of loyal supporters, name recognition [at last] and people will realize that Clinton and McCain will only be fighting for the same vote….there’s scarcely any difference between anything they stand for on the issues.

In that case, MITT ROMNEY would a third party candidate who can actually win in a three way race. The fund raising capacity of a third party would be extraordinary. Can you imagine what conservatives all over the country are feeling and how they cannot stomach being forced to vote for HIllary or McCain. I just heard Sean Hannity say that as soon as he went out and voted in the New York Primary for Mitt, he was going to go out and change his registration from Republican to CONSERVATIVE. With the internet it will just flow in. And the stage would be set for someone [Perhaps Mitt] to say, ‘You know what, the Republican Party has gone astray, and they have pretty much told me that, for now, there is no viable place within it for me.

  8. Lisa Kane Says:

    Hi All!
I just went on a bunch on Mitt Romney blogs, asking him to drop out of the race and endorse Huckabee for President. I figure turn about is fair play, since his people have been pushing for Mike to do the same for him on this and other sites. Besides, you never know, if a lot of us do this it may actually cause some to think twice about supporting Romney!
Below is a copy of what I have been posting:

    Mr. Romney,
I am writing to strongly encourage you to drop out of the Presidential primary race and endorse Governor Mike Huckabee. At this point, realistically, you are very unlikely to garner more support and delegates than Senator McCain. Even if you were to do so, a huge percentage of American voters will refuse to vote for you (as, indeed, they will if John McCain wins) because they perceive you to be “not conservative enough”, and the Democratic candidate (whoever it may be) will end up winning the election. However, if you back Mr. Huckabee, and he wins the primary, your influence with more moderate citizens his with conservative and Christian voters, would be a huge force to be reckoned with, especially since it is this conservative block that is largely responsible for President Bush’s reelection in 2004. The liberal media understands this, and, therefore, how dangerous Mike Huckabee’s candidacy would be for the Democratic Party, which is why their tactics during the past few weeks have been to smear, distort, downplay or completely ignore him. Please take this into consideration and do not allow this to happen to our country. We cannot afford to lose the White House this year. Do the right thing for America.

Wow, cut and past Lisa is quick the doof. Can you belive this chick. She doesn’t even know where she is…

Her utter inanity made my day, even though at a deeper level it makes me fret for the future of our party. Is Lisa the product or our public education system? Does she represent the bright, shining future of our party? Hope not.
