Why We Love Fred Heads — Fred Thompson at His Best

Flag Waving

[Thanks to Mike Laub for this clip found at Encyclopedia Mittanica!]

Not too long ago, Laura Ingraham was playing clips from debates that included Fred’s nailing of Mr. Huckabee (see below). In her monologue, she dubbed Governor Huckabee, “Duckabee” for his proficiency in successfully ducking every major question that ever arises about his policies and past record. Since that time, I have been careful not to use that affectionate moniker (”Duckabee”) in a post, preferring rather to use it in the comments only. Because of this video clip, and all the fond memories it brought to my mind of Fred, I think I will now start to use that moniker of our Clinton neighbor.

FRED: Oh how we miss ye!

Anybody want to ask Fred to raise his hand?

That. . . was one of Fred Thompson’s more beautiful moments.

    I love him for that.

  2. Deg Says:

Beautiful, I wish Romney could do that to McCain. Fred is cool. Love him for that.

Hi Vic, hopeing you can help me with something. I am not real computer savy & would like to run a challenge as a topic not quite certain how to achieve it? Heres my Idea. I have noticed since I came over and started getting out there for Mitt that a lot of the folks outside of us political junkies that follow the primarys, debates etc.. do not know an lot about Mitt, I would believe these to be the “undecided” voters. Heres what I propose…
I would like to Issue a Weekly Challenge to the folks on the site to change this.
It would be the Hooligan Chalenge so to speak. I have as of 6:45 PM I have Handed out 14 of Mitt’s Strategy for a Stronger America (I would like to Include a link on the page for it as well) to uncommited Republican voters. For this week I would like to challenge folks to see how many they can get out too! Could you help me get set up to do this? I figure every week I can post a different challenge to get more exposure for Mitt, and have some fun with the crew here as well! Thanks for your Help!! Hooligan

Why are you talking about Fred Thompson on a Mitt Romney site?

  5. spacemonkey Says:

It a crying shame he’s no longer in the race. I wish Duckabee would’ve dropped out instead.

  6. Karen Says:

Lisa, I believe it’s because we are courting the Fredheads:)

  7. Vic Lundquist Says:

Lisa: Karen is partially correct to my motives. The other is that in this great, short clip, Fred speaks to truth about Duckabee in a way that others could not. He was to the point, not mean, above board, and truthful! My main reason for posting it was to provide exposure to truth brought to light. And I miss Fred.

His deciding not to raise his hand will always stand out in my mind as one of those classic moments in political history. Like Reagan grabbing the mic.

  8. Matt Prihoda Says:

Vic, come on! You don’t miss Fred; you miss his 10-15% of the poll numbers that he took from Huckabee. And be fair - I dare you to post Huckabee’s reply. It was a very able reply to some potshots.

It’s a cheap shot to use a third candidate to attack your opponent in small sound bite simplifications. It would be like going to Huck’sArmy and seeing John McCain calling Romney the candidate of Change. Hey… there’s an idea!

Nah, we’ll take your guy on by ourself. And if we win, we did it ourself. If we lose, at least we didn’t hide behind someone else to do it.

I’ve seen a lot of cheap shots on this website. Vic, it’s beneath you. We have such great debates. I’m surprised to see less substantive things on your blog.
    Matt

    Matt,

Thanks for the note. In part, I posted this Fred piece because it is classic Fred. I posted in part because it is humorous. I did not intend for it to be substantive. I meant for it to be inviting to FredHeads overall. Though Fred speaks to truth, I never said it is the complete truth. No 2-minute spot, on any candidate, can ever provide all truth on an issue. But the points he makes are spot-on to past positions that Gov. Huckabee has in his past. Everybody on this site is well familiar with how Gov. Huckabee has answered these points of his past.

The truth is, that to this point in the campaign, Gov. Huckabee is running as Pastor in Chief. Proof? As a politician ostensibly running for a secular position, he routinely gives religious speeches for $25,000; money that immediately goes into his political coffers. As well, he has struggled to garner 1/3 of all evangelical votes in each state contest. And of all non-evangelicals, he struggles to get even 10% of their entire vote. That is a very narrowly focused campaign that is intended to attract the religious of his faith.

And for what it is worth, a very large percentage of FredHeads have migrated to Governor Romney’s camp. Today, right now, it is all anecdotal. Many of Fred’s top advisors have endorsed Gov. Romney. After Tuesday, we will know how many FredHeads went over to Huck as you assert. My guess is that those who decided to go with Huck in a declining, broke campaign, will be a small minority of Fred’s total supporters. But that is just a guess.
