Fred and Mitt Unite?

Fred and Mitt Unite?

I just saw this among the My Man Mitt comments:

Fred to support Mitt!!
MittandFred.blogspot.com

How legit is this? Anyone know?

I went to their site and found the following:

Developing: Fred to Drop Out, Endorse Mitt

After months of campaigning, one thing is clear: Fred Thompson is a true conservative and an excellent candidate. He enhanced the race with his humor and simple honesty- and he helped keep the issues of illegal immigration, entitlement reform, and national security at the core of the debates.

However, after the first 6 primaries, one more thing is clear: Fred is not going to win the nomination. However, with his experience, popularity, and conservative credentials, Fred still has a lot to offer in this race.

Fortunately, Fred’s platform and personality work together perfectly to shore up the Republican establishment on a Romney-Thompson ticket.

Mitt is the only other guy left in the race that embraces economic, social, and national security conservativism. And, with Fred’s support in Florida, Mitt could secure the nomination.

I’m excited about the prospects, but left to wonder about the veracity. Anyone know for sure?

Update: I left comments on their site, asking about the veracity and this is what they just posted to my inquiries:

ainge family said…
This is not verifiable. Nothing has happened yet. The purpose of the blog is to push this alliance.

Hummmm. Looks like I was fooled. So, who knows what will happen.

Update II: I left a few more comments at their site. My last one chastised them for posting misleading information. I noticed they have since changed their title to a question about Fred endorsing Mitt.

I’m all for building unity between the two camps. We’re both very conservative, in general. But, no misinformation! Respect Fred and his supporters and await the announcement.

I haven’t heard anything of the sort, but I’d be the first to vote for Romney/Thompson 2008. I said it 7 months ago, and I’m saying it today. They’d be a perfect ticket.

  2. Nathan W Says:

    Hi Neal,

Boy I wish this were true, but McCain and Thompson go back a long way. I’d sure hate to jinx it ;)

  3. Neal Jones Says:

You’re right. I didn’t mean to jinx anything. I just added an clarifying update above: those who created the post don’t really know about such a unification. They’re only hoping for one.

So, I should have waited before I posted. I just got all excited.

    It’s another Danny Ainge-wing conspiracy.

  5. jschner Says:

I’ll believe it when I hear it from Fred Thompson himself but it would be a very good endorsement if true. O’Reilly just now said he expects Thompson to support his friend McCain but he also said “that was just a guess”.

I think the conservative vote has been split three ways between Romney Thompson and Huckabee. If Thompson does bail I think regardless of who he endorses the bulk of his supporters will go to Romney and some to Huckabee. But people are starting to figure out Huckabee can not win with just an Evangelical base so they sliding significantly toward Thompson and Romney. So with Thompson out they will be left with only one real place to go and that is Romney.

Knudson(sp?) on FOX today said if Huckabee does poorly in Florida and bails out most of his supporters will go to Romney.

  6. John S. Maine Says:

I think Thompson will come out and back McCain. Thompson was totally hands off of McCain during the debates. Thats typical of the Washington Insiders crowd. They leave their friends alone!

  7. ASLguy Says:

Fred is not true to himself if he endorses McCain because they do not share same views.

  8. liz Says:

I’m hopin’ for ROMNEY/POWELL ‘08 myself. Fred is sweet, but just a little too laid back (euphemism for tired/lazy), I like to get my tax dollars worth and I would like to see a little military and foreign relations experience on the ticket.

  9. Joe Benado Says:

Well, A MR/FT ticket would make it easy for the ENTIRE Republican party to get behind MR. Additionally, it strengthens his ability to take key Southern states in the national campaign. Mitt already showing he plays well in the western states. By the way, a recent Massachusetts primary polls shows Mitt taking over 50% among Republicans which is also on Feb 5.

Fred’s whole campaign effort….or lack of it, is consistent with the early notion that he is generally lazy. Strong ideas and convictions, but he’s not one to wake up consistently to milk the cows at 5:30am everyt day.

He would be a perfect VP where Mitt would put together a strong board of directors, errrrr, I mean Cabinet to get the real work done and Fred would be left to push only a few agenda items as we would not to overwork him. ;-)

  10. Casey Wallace Says:

I don’t think Fred would endorse someone just because they’re a close friend. That would be a shallow endorsement and because it’s abundantly clear they hold differing views and people would see through that. I think he will endorse Romney based on the proximity of their conservative positions. Either way, it appears it doesn’t matter who Fred endorses based on this poll. Romney still picks up the Fredheads:

“Now a poll by Patrick Ruffini: Currently 73% of Fred supporters claim they’ll go to Romney as a second choice to Thompson. And even if Fred endorses McCain, 90% wouldn’t care.”

  11. Ryan S. Says:

I fail to see why finding a VP who can carry red southern-states has any importance whatsoever.

Are we really concerned at all that the heart of Republican-land might go Democrat? Or that conservative Republicans might leave the party?

Fred does absolutely nothing on a Romney ticket. His impact would be redundant and pointless. We need a VP who can carry battleground states, because that’s the only way Republicans will win in November. I’m sure if Fred was VP every Republican would just be thrilled to death that we lost the election but won Mississippi by a land-slide. Let’s be serious here. Throwing Fred’s southern drawl at the likes of New England, upper mid and northwest won’t help anything.

We need a conservative VP with moderate/independent appeal. Revisiting this whole southern nice-guy act would kill us.

Look, Fred’s a nice guy, he’s pretty conservative, but he can’t pull his own weight. Romney would waste important money just flying the guy around and trying to prop him up. Sorry if I sound harsh, but he’s a dead-weight.

  12. Ray Hatton (Libertarian for Romney) Says:

My dad (Libertarian) is hoping its a Romney-Paul ticket…

  13. Tray Says:

Romney is conservative. His record in Mass reflects a conservative leader that did a lot to improve that state economy. The liberal media despises Romney. I don’t understand why that is. Perhaps admitting conservative policies work is not something they want to do so now the Boston Globe is distorting Romney’s record in Mass. My point is Romney is a conservative. Sometimes political leaders have to meet half way to get things to happen. I know Romney made compromises on his health program so he could work with the Dems in Mass. but he still fought for conservative values in the process and people say he has an impeccable record.

I have enjoyed some of the things that Fred Thompson said in the debates but I really don’t understand why people think he is more conservative than Romney.

Romney is known to surround himself with the best and the brightest. I am sure his decision for a VP will be a good one.

If for some reason Romney and Fred do not hook up, I would like to think that a former Fred supporter would take comfort in knowing that Romney is a conservative, with a record to prove it, just don’t expect to find that story via the media as they are campaigning for John McCain. Instead, visit his web site for the real story. I was just reading some comments about Mitt and several were from people in Mass. who love the job he did there.

  14. Casey Says:

    Ray,

I amusingly thought about a Romney-Paul ticket, more like a passing thought actually, until I realized that if somehow Romney kicked the bucket we’d all be screwed.

  15. Joey Says:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2008/01/21/rush-limbaugh-i-can-see-possibly-not-supporting-a-republican-nominee/

We are all aware of the information in the first paragraph. Rush likes Romney and wants to endorse him, but won’t. But the next paragraph and the update both imply some sort of endorsement/ticket announcement soon.

  16. Linda Says:

If Fred endorses McCain and thinks he will get the VP nod from him, what’s to stop Romney and Huck teaming up? I know mutual dislike, but I’m sure Huck can get the evangelical vote at least.

  17. Ken Says:

Mitt will do fine with or without Fred. Lets not place any hope on Fred, lets get busy and support our man Mitt. He can and will Win Florida if we all work together.

Florida Win = The Republican ticket!

    Go Mitt!!!

BTW - LOL … you have a banner ad on the right side (below) for John McCain (probably a google deal). You might want to take that down ;-)

  18. Joey Says:

Huck being a fraud is what’s to stop Romney from teaming with him. Romney wouldn’t align himself with the likes of Huckabee. And it has nothing to do with mutual dislike. Both McCain and Huckabee have a hatred toward Mitt, but Mitt doesn’t seem to hold grudges and participate in childish name calling. I doubt he has a deep love for Huckabee, but that doesn’t mean you have to specifically “dislike” someone.

  19. Mark VA Says:

My first comment is - Joey! What are you doing up at 3:12 AM. Go to bed. Second. Fred will not likely endorse Mitt. It is either stay in the race, endorse McCain, or he drops out and keeps it to himself.

From a previous thread - we believe (wish) that Gov. Romney will select Jim DeMint as VP with some good feelings towards JC Watts, Jr. Powell is 70 years old making Fred look like a spring chicken.
