Mitt Romney Wins Nevada Republican Caucuses

January 19th, 2008 Posted in Mitt Romney, Nevada

Fox News has already reported that Governor Romney has won the Republican Caucuses.

Carl Cameron is on Fox right now saying that this win means nothing, and that Mitt will finish a distant fourth today in SC.

Is he right?

Editorial Insert: CNN is talking about it right now too, some of them are very much dismissing it as well.

Front page of Matt Drudge, too. Links to a Yahoo news story.

  2. Stephen Says:

That is great news!! Nevada is a significant win and only adds to the tally of support for Mitt.

  3. Linda Says:

At this point, it’s all about the delagates. He will remain today the delegate winner, and eventually that will become news.

  4. John S. Maine Says:

Carl Cameron has been overtly pulling for McCain or Huckabee all day in the coverage that I have watched. It is very apparent Fox News needs to reel him in a little so he can be more fair and objective. It seems like the Main Stream Media and even Fox is going to find a way to wright off any states that Mitt Romney wins with some srealy pathetic excuse.

    Lets See

Wyoming - Least Populated State and his son lives there.

Michigan- He grew up there his father was Governor for three terms (over 30 years ago).

Nevada - Large Mormon Populations (6.8 percent) and influence.

However when any of the other candidates win a state is heralded as a huge win or comeback.

The presses biased coverage of this 2008 Race is just pathetic.

  5. Paulie Says:

Just like I figured, this win will be thoroughly “Wyoming”ed. All you WWII junkies might as well break out your old flags, because apparently we only have 48 states that matter now, as far as the press is concerned….

  6. Jeremy Says:

I, admittedly, am a Mitt junkie, and I have watched way too many hours of Fox News. In all of my watching, I have never seen Campaign Carl say one positive statement about Mitt Romney. He is the Least Fair and Balanced reporter that Fox has. I sarcastically think that Carl could be in cahoots with Alan Colmes to shape the republican race.

  7. braddahmike Says:

Rich Todd on MSNBC saying Mitt could be a “the” player in this. With California, Idaho and the west votes, and that he’s been the only one that can say he’s been in the mix in every contest.

  8. Eric Says:

I think because Romney went to Nevada, and because of Nevada’s voter stats

    STATE INFORMATION: 5 electoral votes
    1,043,555 total registered voters — 41% Democratic, 40% Republican, 16% Independent/non-partisan, 5% Other

I think Romney could win Nevada in a general election. Bill Clinton won Nevada in ‘92, I’ll bet Romney would win it in ‘08

How to deal with the “media” conspiracy?

At some point, Mitt has to get together with his “team” and come up with a way to graciously but insistently “make fun” of the media. The people in this nation has less respect for media than any other group except ambulance chasing lawyers and dope dealers. Look at the polls.

When someone [see Fred Thompson] gently but firmly puts them in their place, the people of this country realize that there’s a guy who’s not going to be “bullied”.

Something along the lines of a Reaganesque “there they go again”, as he makes fun of them and dismisses their judgments. Not just some vague remark about “the pundits being wrong again”. It has to be about the peculiarity, the thoughtless, the exceeding of reportorial responsibility….and WITH HUMOR. But this issue WILL DECIDE the campaign ..and the success of the Presidency…..in the end. He just has to be dismissive [in a genteel fashion] and highly critical [in an engaging humorous manner]. It is time to concentrate on making fun of their nonsensical pronouncements.

On another theme, I believe that we have to realize that when we talk about Mainstream Media we are talking about a demographic group with an extremely liberal, anti-family values approach to life. These folks are basically Coastal [New York, Boston, Washington and California] cocktail party drones. Worse, they are fiercely pro abortion, anti-marriage, and either pro-gay or gay lifestyle themselves, heavy partiers, drinkers, cocaine users, etc. I have spend enough time with them to know this to be the case. And they cannot tolerate the type of guy Mitt is, and some of them, such as this Johnson guy, with whom he had his run in, are clearly seeking to give him “payback” for his anti-abortion and anti gay marriage stands he took in Massachusetts, while the other candidates have been able to waffle on these issues because they didn’t have to do anything in their states.

This is a great read that puts South Carolina in perspective. As the old saying goes…”thing’s ain’t what they used to be”…….

Amazing the perspective you get when you don’t get it from the MSM.

    Peninsula Envy
Florida is the new South Carolina.

    By Michael Graham

“Eight years ago, winning South Carolina meant massive momentum headed into southern Super Tuesday states and, historically, the GOP nomination. Eight years ago, winning South Carolina meant you were the party of Reagan’s mainstream conservative choice.

Today? When John McCain wins South Carolina — as he almost certainly will, for reasons to follow — it will mean almost nothing.”

“Instead of being the first state where the GOP’s natural conservative majority shapes the political field, South Carolina will be the final state of confusion, the last politically pointless stop on this wild 2008 ride.

To paraphrase Churchill, South Carolina is the end of the beginning. Florida will be the beginning of the end.

But don’t cry for South Carolina. Yes, it’s picked every GOP nominee since 1980, but it hasn’t picked a winner — a Republican who could actually win the popular vote — since 1988.”

ON Cameron at FOX: I for one have come to the point where I just turn them off, whenever he comes on.

The way to remedy this is via a massive email, write in campaign to FOX and ASAP. It does little good for us to complain among ourselves. The point is to besiage FOX with comments and facts [such as "turning them off when he comes on]. …and you can be sure he’ll be monitored and his own no doubt peculiar “lifestyle” preferences not allowed to get in the way of his reporting.

  12. JoyP Says:

The turn out has been great. In our small valley, the people were told to expect a turn out of about 50 people. In our precinct, there were 35 and out of around 10 precincts in the valley, ours was probably the smallest. Do the math, wow. Everything I am hearing from the Vegas news is that it is going to be a blow-out for Romney. In our valley it was.
Interesting that Nevada is important if you are a democrat but nothing if you’re a republican.

  13. Paulie Says:

So assuming the media will dismiss this win no matter what happens, anybody want to see McCain finish in 3rd back behind Ron Paul, in Arizona’s backyard?

  14. Nealie Ride Says:

Just got word about some Nevada-specific data:

Wolf Blitzer just said 25% of Republican Caucus goers were Mormon. 94% of those voted for Romney. Romnery beat Huckabee by a slim margin among Evangelicals.

That’s a overrepresentation of the LDS population. Boy, do they like Mitt!

I’ve heard in the past that about 90% of LDS folks vote Republican. This is before Mitt Romney. Mitt may have only bumped up the Mormon Republican-ness 4%.

And, boy, it’s nice to beat Huck among evangelicals. If Mitt garnered 94% of the LDS vote and lost the evangelical vote (badly), this victory wouldn’t suggest such wide support.

  15. Eric Says:

Do you want Carl Cameron to hear you?

  16. John S. Maine Says:

I think Mitt should start showing a map of the United States minus Nevada and Wyoming and start telling the media how he is that candidate who will make them part of the union. He can give them a geogrpahy lesson which they desperately need.

  17. John S. Maine Says:

I just need typing and spelling lessons!

  18. Carolina Says:

    NEWSFLASH!!!

The Press does not want Mitt Romney to win the GOP Nomination.

Now Back to our regularly scheduled shilling for McCain and Huckabee.

  19. Paulie Says:

http://www.lvrj.com/ - Las Vegas Review Journal, with incoming results divvied up by county.

  20. JoyP Says:

I wonder if there is a way to get the media who is dismissing this win, to at least pay attention to the fact that there is an astonishing turn out? People are calling in to a Vegas radio station saying there are thousands more turning out there than expected. One man said he had to walk a mile and a half to the school because of the parking for the caucus.

  21. Carolina Says:

Carl Cameron was just extremely POSITIVE about Mitt’s win in Nevada.

  22. Linda Says:

Now the we know that Mormons helped to get the state for Romney in Nevada, my hope is that they will come out in droves to help Romney in Arizona on Super Tuesday. Wouldn’t it be a dream-come-true if Romney took Arizona right out from under McCain?
Note: Chris Matthews for the first time ever today is starting to call Romney a real contender in this. This is a major development if you have been watching Hardball. He’s discussing a brokered convention with McCain/ Romney the frontrunners, and having them both be on the ticket together. Interesting thought.

  23. Linda Says:

In-trade has Huck at 55% and 45% for McCain. They haven’t been wrong about the republicans yet. I think Huck will win this thing. Good or Bad for Mitt? Anybody?

  24. Paulie Says:

Huck winning could be good for Mitt, since McCain is the bigger threat down the road.

In fact, somebody over at Townhall, I think Patrick Ruffini, suggested that Romney/Thompson supporters in SC should vote Huckabee, specifically to end the media anointed “frontrunner” status for McCain. I don’t know if I agree that anybody should go that far, but the general opinion is that a Huckabee win is the lesser of the two evils. Now if Romney’s win in NV can bring a surprising 2nd place finish for him in SC, then that would just be amazing…

  25. frofreak Says:

    John,

Loved the whole map minus NV WY thing, that would be priceless!

  26. dana maryla Says:

Here’s something I just posted on Carl Cameron’s Blog:

    http://cameron.blogs.foxnews.com/

    Carl,

I just don’t think you “GET IT”. I’ve been a devout, chronic FOX viewer since day ONE, and now when you come on the air, I turn to another channel.

Instead of noting that the Republican Party [with it's regrettable lack of "will" to proudly define itself---as it did with Ronald Reagan]…has provided us with an initial series of several aberrant, idiosyncratic, and useless “primary/caucuses”…in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Caroline…which are not at all typical or indicative of any true Republican base….and so will all be eventually and easily discounted because of the invitation of Democrat, Independent interlopers or because of excessive evangelicals………..you seem to diminish or disparage Romney and his victories in truly key Republican and National states…such as Michigan, where the economy and labor votes are to be found and swayed, and those out West and in the Mountain States where the Republican party is now centered.

You’ve gotten it backwards……and seem clueless on all this. Do you really in your deepest, latent, teenage fantasies actually think McCain has a prayer of winning the Republican nomination.

McCain is just “HILLARY IN DRAG”. I’ve been a lifetime Republican Supporter, after my initial days as a Kennedy Democrat, and if McCain ever won the nomination, I would not only not vote for him, but would vote for anyone running as a third party candidate, since he would essentially ruin the Republican Party. I have been an ardent supporter and worker for Republican Causes for decades and I would do ANYTHING to stop McCain. Why? Because he is a mentally unbalanced, egomaniacal, lying, old politics, self-aggrandizing, saboteur of all Conservative values.

One of these days, you might get this, Carl. But by then I will have long ago turned off FOX News.

  27. liz Says:

YEEEAAAAHHHH! I thought Nevada was full of sin and casinos, now MSM advises it is FULL of MORMONS! I think that’s a change for the better myself, GO MITT!

  28. Linda Says:

Mormons did turn out in droves to support him — you can’t argue with that. This shows that he has LOTS of support in the west.

  29. John S. Maine Says:

Ann can we start a blog on the demise of John McCain and how he cant win the west his own backyard?

  30. Paulie Says:

Romney won handily among Evangelicals, mainstream Protestants, and Roman Catholics as well though. From what I read LDS vote was about 20-25% of the total.

  31. shiggz Says:

i seem to remember in 2000,2004 waiting on Nevada as one of the last swing states to get tallies in because of its time zone.

I wouldn’t call Nevada nothing republicans probably wont in 08 without it.

  32. Linda Says:

I think if he can win this easily in Nevada, he has a good shot at winning several other states in the west as well on Super Tuesday. Maybe even California?

  33. For Mitt Says:

I truly believe Mitt can win California. He has a very strong grassroot organization all ready to be moblized if not already. He can win California. We just need to get to work.

  34. Joe W Says:

    Linda,

I think it depends on Thompson, if Thompson is thought to do poorly he will drop out. He likely will endorse McCain. But I think most of his votes go to Mitt. Thompson stays in, he slices up the conservative in Fl and other states.

  35. Dave Williams Says:

The ‘Straight Talk’ about getting STEAMROLLED!!!! Mitt 55% vs Mac 12% hahahahhahaHahahahahha

Wackey RON PAUL beat Mac & Cheese….hahahahahahha, now that’s getting STEAMROLLED!!!!!!!!

  36. ChuckP Says:

I went to the Republican Caucus this morning to support Romney, and I have a few comments. First, the turnout, at least in my caucus site, was amazing. There was a long line of cars leading up to the high school, and many people had to park in empty desert lots around the school. I’m told that 24% of the Republican voters in the precincts that caucused at that site turned out. Second, Romney swept everyone away, but more importantly, he has almost four times the number of votes as Clinton, who won the Democratic caucus. Last, as of this hot moment, Ron Paul (who is second; Nevadans have a strong libertarian streak in them) has with 13% of the Republican votes more votes than Clinton. This may very well be a good sign of what this state will do in November if Romney is the nominee.

  37. JoyP Says:

The NBC Nightly news reported that 50% of the voters for Romney in Nevada were Mormons. They want to make this about Mormons. One article I read said this was Identity Politics!!! That was what Rush was calling the support for Huckabee with evangelicals so I thought it was interesting that the MSM picked up on that and applied it to Mitt. I wonder why the MSM is not held to a standard of honesty. There is quite a difference between their 50% statement and the 20-25% Mormon vote.

  38. ChuckP Says:

Even if that is true, it still means that Romney had twice as many votes from non-mormons as his nearest competitor. Sounds like a convincing win among non-mormons to me.
