Head of Christian Home-School Entity Endorses Romney — Says Huckabee Imposed Restrictions on Home-Schoolers in Arkansas

This is a great coup for Governor Romney! The head of a Christian home-schoolers organization endorsed him today. Let’s hope this endorsement will get many of the evangelicals in Michigan to vote for Governor Romney, or at least think twice before voting for the person who should be their fifth choice.
ROMNEY’S MICHIGAN SUPPORT — Domenico Montanaro
You may recall that it was believed the large number of home-schoolers in Iowa had a big impact for Huckabee. Well, I think this is outstanding news for Governor Romney in Michigan!
[emphasis below is mine]
Romney’s scooping up some support in Michigan heading into the home stretch before Tuesday’s primary. One intriguing get is the support of Dennis Smith, who heads up the Information Network for Christian Homes, which has supported home-schoolers in the Wolverine State since 1984.
Smith yesterday circulated a letter in the state supporting Romney and denouncing many of the Republican candidates, including McCain, and explained in detail the rationale for his thinking. Of McCain, Smith writes: “McCain has been wrong on issues like campaign finance reform and immigration, has an un-presidential nasty temper, and I just don’t like him.”
While Romney’s chief rival here is McCain, Smith’s support of the Michigan native is a bigger blow to Huckabee, who is making a play for the state and is certain to try and turn his success with Christians and home-schooling families in Iowa into similar gains here. According to Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis, “That could have a great negative impact on Hucakabee’s ability to organize under the table sort of speak and help Romney pull in unexpected support.”
Smith writes that Huckabee “says he supports home-schoolers and that they should be left alone, yet he signed into law a bill that imposed new restrictions on homeschoolers in AR.”
He added that he investigated Huckabee’s record in the past few weeks and through a series of e-mails and issues that were drawn to his attention, Smith said the confluence of factors “really point out some deficiencies in Gov. Huckabee,” especially when it comes to education. “I’m not pleased with what I saw about what Gov. Huckabee did in Arkansas.” He went on that Huckabee’s “rhetoric today doesn’t match his” past.
The Michigan team believes the campaign is bound to do well in the state because the level of attention has not been what it was in Iowa or New Hampshire, and so the level of turnout will not be comparable. For those who do turn out and haven’t been following closely, “The default will be for a guy named Romney in this state,” one strategist said this morning, adding that the size of McCain’s lead in some polling isn’t consistent with what they’re seeing.

Well the truth WILL out, won’t it Mr. Huckabee? As a homeschool mom I appreciate someone doing the homework! Now I wonder, does Arkansas education really rank 8th nation wide as Huckabee claims? Now his claims are always suspect as far as I’m concerned.

The Romney camp needs to find a way to rally the home-schoolers the way the evangicals are trying to turn out votes for Huckabee. In my opinion, those churches that use or allowed others to use their church lists should immediately lose their tax-exempt status.
Vote Romney!

What is Romney’s position on homeschooling?

I am LDS and my is homeschooled and doing very well. Homeschooling families are very up on potential laws that might take away on their freedoms. They get the word out. I guess Romney is for allowing families choice.

Mitt Romney has addressed the homeschooling question, and he is definitely in favor of it. Here is a link to a blog on this site that talks about Mitt and homeschooling:
http://blog.electromneyin2008.com/2007/11/09/romney-wants-tax-help-for-home-schooling/
Here is the money quote:
“Parents who home school their children should get a tax credit to help offset the expense of teaching, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday.
“I also believe parents who are teaching their kids at home, homeschoolers, deserve a break, and I’ve asked for a tax credit to help parents in their homes with the cost of being an at-home teacher,” he said.
“Romney supports giving parents more educational options, through charter schools or vouchers, but he said legislation should be done on a state level.”
Also, here is a link to Mitt’s site, where he talks about education, and in part mentions homeschooling. It says basically the same thing:

I too home-educate my children and have since the beginning (1990). Mitt Romney wants to give home-educators the “breaks” that we need to continue to do what we believe if right for our families. He isn’t for “big government” and wants to let the parents make the decisions for our families.
Huckabee made comment in the debate in South Carolina that his state’s education was ranked 8th - WHAT A LIE, like all his other statements. Check it out for yourself, I did right then and there during the debate. The ranking for Arkansas in American Education is 32nd!!! This man really is talking out of both sides of his mouth. Sure, do on Leno, play your bass, go on T.V. make jokes, be funny - that isn’t a president, that is an entertainer. He probably is a good man, BUT, he is not a leader that we can trust to run our country. His words are always mingled with truth, but not the real truth.
Mitt Romney is a man of results! Everything he has done as make progress, and given positive results. I have family who has known him since his mission days, and they would say “he is the real deal.” I believe that as well. We need this man to lead us into more technology, a more vibrant economy, competition with China, a free and safe nation from radical jhihadists! Mitt is IT!!!!

As a homeschooling mom & member of the LDS church I will tell you I will NOT be supporting Mr. Romney for the R ticket!!! Please remember that when he ran for the governorship of the state of Mass. he supported a women’s right to choose an abortion!!!! I do understand he has “changed” his mind on this very important moral issue…… but he surely is not pulling the wool over my eyes or my husband’s eyes. Romeny is a politician … he changes his tune and opinions to win elections and votes. This to me shows that he is not a man of integrity. If a man can not fight for the right of the unborn child - I feel he can not be loyal the principles of freedom of this great country…… if an unborn infant can not be protected - what makes you think Mitt will protect Americans?
My husband & I will continue to support Mr. Mike Huckabee.
What makes me more sick is that Mr. Romney claims to be a devout mormon & yet he is pro choice???? wow…….if he can’t even hold dear the tenents of his faith, then he most certainly can not be trusted with the office of Pres. of the United States.
We appreciate Mr. Huckabee’s strong moral ethics — we believe it is important to elect godly men who will bring godly wisdom to the white house!
NO votes for Romney here!!!!!!

“We appreciate Mr. Huckabee’s strong moral ethics — we believe it is important to elect godly men who will bring godly wisdom to the white house!”
You do realize that Huckabee was embroiled in numerous ethical scandals while governor of Arkansas, right? Huckabee pardoned people for money, and he fired people who wouldn’t give his son special treatment after his son cruelly tortured and killed a stray animal at Boy Scout camp. Huckabee stole furniture out of the governor’s mansion when he left, and was sued and forced to return the stuff because he had no right to it. He took hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of donations while governor, which led to MANY investigations of his governorship. He let convicted murderers into the street, free to murder again (and they did.)
That is your ethical candidate?
Doesn’t make sense to me. But then again, I’m a lowly Mitt supporter. I apparently don’t understand a lot of this stuff.

The flack seems to be that Huckabee brought some change in the home schooling laws in AR. Forgive me for responding w/o researching my recollections. I believe those changes were to put stipulations into law rather than leave *no* reference to home schooling.
Having home schooled in four states in various geographical areas of the US, some law is necessary because w/o any reference to home schoolers, local officials can mandate anyway they seem fit. Not a good thing.
All of that being said… Unfortunately, at the time of my input, neither candidate is viable which should cause Christians to pray for the future of our nation and to vote their conscience. God bless our land….Sola Dei Gloria
