So, who do you think is going to come in second in Iowa?
Gov. Huckabee, we hardly knew you. Then we started to learn a bit about you and promptly ran in the other direction. I could pretend that I’m angry about Huckabee’s baldly duplicitous press conference this morning, but I can’t. His attempt at playing the poor Christian martyr refusing to fight back (against legitimate ads focusing on his poor policies), but-here’s-the-ad-we-were-going-to-show-anyway-so-you-can-play-it-a-thousand-times-tonight-and-I-can-pretend-I’m-running-a-completely-positive-campaign spin was so badly mangled that the press corps laughed in his face. It was a gut-check reaction from a group of people who didn’t have time to filter their thoughts on the subject through a thousand different prisms and decide whether the strategy was brilliantly conceived or not. For that moment they were human, and the level of political theater had reached such a high degree of B.S. that it was on par with Ahmadinejad’s assertion that there are no homosexuals in Iran. Any credibility he hoped to achieve could get tossed right out the window with one simple soundbite.
I’m not angry because the con man has been exposed completely and there’s no putting that genie back in the bottle. Of course, we’ve known that Gov. Huckabee has been playing on the people of Iowa’s emotions for months without the slightest hint of substance. No, the emotion that I’m feeling today is more along the lines of schadenfreude. Our opponent has been kind enough to give us a sword and then proceeded to run into it a few times himself.
Bye-bye Huckster.
Now on to the campaign ahead of us. I feel confident tonight in stating that Gov. Romney will win Iowa. Yesterday the big question was who would come in 3rd. Now, I think, the question has shifted to who comes in 2nd.
Obviously, the best scenerio we could hope for would be a wounded Gov. Huckabee coming in 2nd with Sen. Thompson coming in a distant 3rd, but that seems unlikely. More probable we’ll see a last-minute surge from Sen. McCain and Sen. Thompson that may well overtake Gov. Huckabee. But the nightmare scenerio of Sen. McCain coming in 2nd might well be the “big story” of the night (for Republicans anyway).
Somehow, I don’t think that would happen though. Gov. Huckabee’s support really did not come from the Sen. McCain wing of the party. Really, the most obvious beneficiary of the southern-style social conservative, 2nd Amendent heavy candidate is Sen. Thompson.
So, I’m making an official ending prediction for Iowa:
1. Gov. Romney 35%
2. Sen. Thompson 23%
3. Sen. McCain 19%
4. Gov. Huckabee 15%
What this means for a resurgent Sen. Thompson campaign, I do not know. His odds tonight are better than the 1% chance I gave him yesterday though. S. Carolina again becomes an important state.
To make matters worse, as Huckabee’s challenges have grown more intense of late, he has lost the aide he brought on to handle his rapid-response and research operation.
Joe Carter, who took a leave from the Family Research Council to move down to the former Arkansas governor’s campaign headquarters in Little Rock, has returned to Washington, leaving a key position unfilled in the crucial final days before the caucuses.
With Carter gone — his last e-mail to reporters was Dec. 17 — Huckabee has been largely responding to every new story or attack that emerges himself, at times compounding the problem.
“Mike Huckabee is the candidate that just keeps on giving!” [quote from Jeff Fuller just now after speaking with him]
Does Mr. Huckabee think we are all complete, utter idiots?
[Please forgive me for using the nickname "Duckabee" --- I depart from the normal decorum in this one instance as I believe the label best suits Huckabee as he continues to dodge truth --- I simply could not resist.]
KUDOS to Rusty, Ann Marie, and Mike for getting the Huckabee low-road story up so fast. Is this amazing, or what? Seriously, I think Huckabee woke up this morning and said to his wife,
“I think I want to become the first presidential candidate in the history of the Iowa caucuses to become a certifiable laughing stock of the media and the good folks of Iowa. What do you think darling? What is the best way for me to do that today?”
There are so many words that came to my mind after seeing all the reports today on this. I chose the title of this post from a line in Rusty’s post. Here are the words that came to my mind after watching all of these reports on Duckabee:
— CUNNING — INDECISIVE — MANIPULATIVE — CRAFTY — DISENGENUOUS — UNSOPHISTICATED — BACK-WATER — DISHONEST — CORRUPT — DECEITFUL — FRAUDULENT — DOUBLE-DEALING — UNPRINCIPLED — UNSCRUPULOUS — GUILE — TWO-FACED — DESPERATE (I could list the other 25 but want to keep this short)
Why the word “dishonest”? Simply because Duckabee absolutely knew that the State of Massachusetts, by law, does not allow capital punishment. Even if the guy feigns ignorance on this, he is inept at the very least. Governor Romney campaigned to add the death penalty in Mass.
The best moment of this day with Duck? When he said he made the (”high road”) decision to not run the ad but that he wanted to show it to the reporters so they supposedly would know he made the ad. He made that statement with a complete straight face as if he were serious. Then the entire audience burst out in complete spontaneous laughter and Duckabee stood there with a complete serious face. I totally expected him to burst into laughter himself. That was hilarious!
Carl Cameron, in one clip I saw, said this could end up as a genius move by Duck. If the people of Iowa don’t mind being played the fools by his camp, then maybe. There is a chance that Huckabee has attained “martyr” status in the minds of some in Iowa. If so, then there will be a sympathy following, but still I cannot imagine thinking people backing a person who touts his “Christian values” while his behavior is completely dishonest at best.
No, I think this will sink Huck’s life-raft. Iowans are not fools. Reporters of the MSM are not fools and I think they will turn on Huck. Until about two weeks ago, Huck has gotten a pass from the MSM. His presumptuous, manipulative, and cunning behavior to play all the reporters for fools will backfire. They will shred him in the next few days. Mark my words. It is over for Huckabee. He will get the martyr-sympathy vote, but that is it (credit to Jeff Fuller for this insight). Iowans are too smart to vote for this guy. I think we will see the media eat Huckabee alive over the next three plus days.
I wish I could be a fly on the wall in one of the Republican caucus meeting halls to hear the discussions among voters. Oh, how sweet it would be.
Here is how I would like the results to show three nights from now, in Iowa, on Thursday night:
— Romney: 44%
— Hunter: 18%
— Thompson: 9%
— Keyes: 8%
— Giuliani: 5%
— Paul: 5%
— McCain: 5%
— Tancredo: 4% (yes, he will still get votes)
— Duckabee: 2%
I gave Duckabee 4%, not because I think there are really dumb Iowans, but because I think 4% of the Republican voters of Iowa who liked Duckabee a month ago, will not have gotten the news from today.
IOWANS: Please remember that both Giuliani and McCain abandoned the Ames Straw Poll in August effectively telling you a) your straw poll does not matter, and b) we [McCain/Giuliani] don’t want you to have any of our campaign money for your economy.
One of the nice things about this document is that it provides the text to a number of Romney’s major speeches. I spent some time reading the text of these speeches and was struck by how powerful and well thought out they are. They are worth reading.
Below is the text of the speech Romney delivered at the 2007 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
“The mainstream media is surprised that we’re here. They wrote our obituary last fall. Course, they’ve written our obituary before: after Watergate, after the 82 midterm elections, after Iran-contra, and after Bill Clinton’s election. The truth is that their wishful thinking reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated. In fact, I predict that we’ll be around a lot longer than . . . say, newspapers.
“No, conservatism is alive and well. And it is needed more than ever. America faces a new generation of challenges, critical challenges. Today is similar in many respects to what we faced as a nation 30 years ago, looking at the menacing face of communism.
“In fact, 30 years ago, in this very conference, one man stood up and told America what was needed. It was conservatism, a new coalition of conservatives that would lead to a brighter future for the nation. Ronald Reagan said this: ‘What I envision is not simply a melding together of the two branches of American conservatism into a temporary uneasy alliance, but the creation of a new, lasting majority.’ And here is where he said that this conservative alliance would lead: ‘I have seen the conservative future, and it works.’
Pay special attention to the “no executions” part, like I said earlier Massachusetts doesn’t have the death penalty so there is a good reason for that. I think the whole thing reeks amateurism, and is absolutely laughable. Heck the “Trust Huckabee” group does a better job at campaign ads lol.
“Huckabee said the ad which attacks Romney for being too dishonest to be president — was sent to television and radio stations yesterday but will not be broadcast. He said he had made the decision 10 minutes before his [12:00pm CST] news conference, surprising even his top staff. ‘I pulled the ad. I do not want it to be run at all,’ he said.”
“[Senior aide Charmaine] Yoest, who set up the staging of the press conference, just came back out to the hallway and said she was told about five minutes before the event started that he would not air the ad. By then, she said, it was too late to remove the signs.”
The Cedar Rapid Gazette tells a different story and says the ad was pulled from KCRG-TV9 TV9 in Cedar Rapids at precisely 10:01am CST:
“An official at KCRG-TV9 TV9 in Cedar Rapids confirmed that the station received the 30-second spot from the Huckabee campaign shortly after 6 a.m. today but was told at 10:01 a.m. not to air the commercial and the station did not show the paid advertisement.”
Looks like we have a Drama King on our hands Ladies and Gentlemen.
“To say one thing one minute and then turn around and show an attack ad to reporters the next will, obviously, leave folks with a very cynical view of Mike Huckabee and his message.”
Camera Crews Jump for Coverage
After it became clear that Huckabee was not going to air the ad on Iowa television, but would still preview it for reporters, the press corps offered a collective laugh in recognition of what Huckabee was up to.
Asked to explain the pledge to stay positive with his decision to still show the ad and display the oppo, Huckabee said he only showed the negative spot to prove that he had actually cut one and had made this decision (link).
So he had to think about keeping his promise? It’s not like he has a problem with telling the truth. And it’s not like he hasn’t already been negative PERSONALLY. Romney has been talking about the issues, and praising Huckabee personally in his contrast issue adds. Huckabee has been running to any microphone within eye site calling Mitt Romney names, saying he is “dishonest, and desperate” and Saint Huckabee tries to act all holier-than-anyone claiming, after he airs his negative adds, that he is not going to run them because he is such a nice guy?
Please Read Rusty’s Post that already mentioned this earlier on the blog. I missed that he’d already posted it. You gotta love those fast moving news days
You read that right, he assembled a room full of reports to Unveil his attack ad against Romney, and then said, ““It’s never too late to do the right thing,” in regards to not airing them. Then he proceeded to play the ad because he said Reporters wouldn’t believe it existed.
I find this description of the ad almost humorous (from The NY Times):
At the same time, he pointed to media cynicism as the reason he felt compelled to show the ad, saying that unless he showed it, reporters would not believe that it really existed. It criticized Mr. Romney’s record as governor of Massachusetts, saying he supported gun control, allowed a co-pay for abortions in his health plan, raised taxes and ordered no executions.
The last part in bold above is the most humorous, seeing that Massachusetts —>doesn’t have the death penalty. I guess that Huckabee would have Governor Romney just going around and ordering people to randomly execute people. I guess he’d like for him to become a “Mafia like” figure.
I swear this guy is absolutely clueless, and he gets more ignorant by the moment.

Despite His Claims, Gov. Huckabee Supported Special Tuition Breaks For Illegals
“Governor, let me stop you right there because a lot of people have looked at this and I’ve got the bill right in front of me, and I know that what you’re talking about may have been in your original legislation, but you continued to push for a bill after the scholarship provisions were dropped that would simply provide in-state tuition benefits to illegal immigrants. I’ve read through it.” – ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos (ABC’s “This Week,” 12/2/07)
Gov. Huckabee Has Repeatedly Claimed He Didn’t Support Tuition Breaks For Illegals:
On NBC’s “Meet The Press” Yesterday, Gov. Huckabee Claimed He Did Not Support Special Tuition Breaks For Illegals. GOV. HUCKABEE: “He said that I supported special breaks for illegal aliens. That’s not true, Tim. We supported simply giving children, who had earned a scholarship the same, it never happened, didn’t make the legislature.” (NBC’s “Meet The Press,” 12/30/07)
At The CNN, YouTube Debate, Gov. Huckabee Said He Did Not Support Giving Illegals Tuition Breaks. GOV. HUCKABEE: “Ashley, first of all let me just express that you’re a little misinformed. We never passed a bill that gave special privileges to the children of illegals to go to college.” (CNN/YouTube, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, St. Petersburg, FL, 11/28/07)
On ABC’s This Week, Gov. Huckabee Again Tried To Claim He Didn’t Support In-State Tuition Breaks For Illegals. ABC’s GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: “Excuse me. Let me just stop you right there because that’s why you pushed a bill that would allow the children of illegal immigrants, if they went through an Arkansas high school, to get in-state tuition.” GOV. HUCKABEE: “Actually it was to qualify for an Academic Challenge Scholarship which was a meritorious scholarship based on their grade point average, their being drug and alcohol free, and their also being in the process of applying for citizenship.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 12/2/07; YouTube)
Gov. Huckabee Has Also Repeatedly Claimed That He Only Supported Merit-Based Scholarships:
Gov. Huckabee Claimed, “It Wasn’t About Out-Of-State Tuition, It Was An Academic Meritorious Scholarship.” GOV. HUCKABEE: “I supported the bill that would have allowed those children who had been in our schools their entire school life, the opportunity to have the same scholarship that their peers had, who had also gone to high school with them and sat in the same classrooms. They couldn’t just move in in their senior year and go to college. It wasn’t about out-of-state tuition, it was an academic meritorious scholarship, called the Academic Challenge Scholarship.” (CNN/YouTube, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, St. Petersburg, FL, 11/28/07)
Gov. Mike Huckabee Said He Only Supported A Program Where Illegals Were Granted “Scholarship[s]” For Doing “Academically Well.” FOX NEWS’ BILL HEMMER: “The suggestion in that is that you favor giving children of illegal immigrants tuition breaks.” HUCKABEE: “Here’s the deal — he has hit me on that. Mitt Romney has tried to hit me on that. What I supported was the idea that if a student had been in our Arkansas high schools and had done academically well to be able to compete for an academic challenged scholarship which was meritorious then that student should be able to have the same opportunity as anyone else. It wasn’t a special break. It was something that a person had earned.” (Fox News’ “Live,” 11/14/07; YouTube)
But The Fact Is, Gov. Huckabee Supported A Bill Granting ONLY In-State Tuition Breaks To Illegals:
Gov. Huckabee Proposed Extending Taxpayer-Funded College Scholarships To Illegal Aliens. “Gov. Mike Huckabee is proposing extending eligibility for state-funded college scholarships to illegal aliens who graduate from Arkansas high schools - an idea that several legislators predicted will go nowhere.” (Laura Kellams, “Huckabee Plan Would Aid Illegal Aliens,” Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 1/12/05)
Gov. Huckabee Asked Arkansas Legislator Joyce Elliott To Add His Scholarship Proposal To Her Bill Extending In-State Tuition To Illegal Immigrants. “In 2005, Huckabee tried to make children of illegal immigrants eligible for scholarships and in-state college tuition. Joyce Elliott, the former state representative who sponsored the scholarship measure, said she originally had wanted to offer just in-state tuition, but Huckabee’s office asked her to add the scholarship provision. ‘The notion I got from him is that he believed it was the right thing to do,’ said Elliott, a Democrat from Little Rock.” (Andrew DeMillo, “Huckabee Adopts New Tone On Immigration,” The Associated Press, 12/27/07)

Yet The Scholarship Portion Was Stripped From The Bill:
The Scholarship Portion Of The Bill Was Stripped From The Bill. “Hard-liners, led by state Sen. Jim Holt, R-Springdale, said ‘illegal aliens,’ as they prefer, have no rights because they’re lawbreakers. It may not be fair to single Holt out because he had plenty of company. When House Bill 1525 stalled in a Senate committee, the scholarship portion of the bill was stripped out, sending the measure to the Senate floor, where it failed twice, the final time by only two votes.” (Dennis Byrd, “Federal Judge: Illegal Immigrants Qualify For Tuition Breaks,” Arkansas News, 7/10/05)
And The Bill That Was Actually Voted On Only Included In-State Tuition Breaks For Illegals. H.B. 1525, “Access To Postsecondary Education Act Of 2005″: Arkansas State Document Gov. Huckabee Fought To Pass The Stripped Bill Which Granted ONLY In-State Tuition Breaks For Illegals. “[The] only bill in the governor’s 21-bill legislative package that failed to win legislative approval was a proposal to make the children of illegal immigrants eligible for state-funded scholarships and in-state tuition to Arkansas colleges. After passing the House relatively early in the session, the bill faltered in the Senate where it was amended to remove the scholarship provision but fell just short of passage Tuesday and Wednesday. Huckabee said his office worked throughout the day Wednesday for the two Senate votes needed to pass the bill. ‘I don’t understand the opposition to it, I just honestly don’t,’ Huckabee said.” (Melissa Nelson, “Governor Touts Successful End To Legislative Session,” The Associated Press, 4/13/05)
Gov. Huckabee Has Been Misleading On The Issue:
The Washington Post Called Out Gov. Huckabee’s Misleading Statements. ” In fact, the initial bill he supported did have a scholarship provision. But that provision was later stripped out, and was not included in the legislation that Huckabee continued to push. The bill read: ‘Any tuition rate that is granted to residents of Arkansas shall be granted on the same terms to all persons, regardless of immigration status, who have attended a secondary educational institution in Arkansas for at least three (3) years and who have either graduated from an Arkansas high school or received a general education diploma in the state.’” (Michael D. Shear, “Rising in Iowa Polls, Huckabee Now In Crosshairs,” The Washington Post, The Washington Post Blog, Posted 11/15/07)
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos: “You Continued To Push For A Bill After The Scholarship Provisions Were Dropped.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “… you pushed a bill that would allow the children of illegal immigrants, if they went through an Arkansas high school, to get in-state tuition.” GOV. HUCKABEE: “Actually it was to qualify for an Academic Challenge Scholarship which was a meritorious scholarship based on their grade point average, their being drug and alcohol free, and their also being in the process of applying for citizenship.” MR. STEPHANOPOULOS: “Governor, let me stop you right there because a lot of people have looked at this and I’ve got the bill right in front of me, and I know that what you’re talking about may have been in your original legislation, but you continued to push for a bill after the scholarship provisions were dropped that would simply provide in-state tuition benefits to illegal immigrants. I’ve read through it.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 12/2/07; YouTube)
As Gov. Huckabee Granted More Clemencies, Applications Poured In
“Just as I did as Governor, I pledge as President to have a clear set of written, published guidelines setting out under what conditions pardons and commutations will be considered. Victims and their families will have an opportunity to be heard. Justice is not served when pardons and commutations are granted in an arbitrary or capricious manner.” – Gov. Mitt Romney (Gov. Mitt Romney, Statement, 12/31/07) The More Clemencies Gov. Huckabee Granted, The More Applications Poured In:
Gov. Huckabee “Cut Prison Sentences Or Granted Pardons For More Than 1,000 Criminals.” “Nothing was more controversial about Mr. Huckabee’s governorship than his use of clemency to grant pardons and commute prison sentences. … In all, Mr. Huckabee cut prison sentences or granted pardons for more than 1,000 criminals, far more than either his immediate predecessors or governors in neighboring states. This did not happen by chance.” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07)
“Huckabee Granted Clemency An Average Of About Once Every Four Days.” “Huckabee granted 1,033 pardons and commutations in his 10 1/2 years as governor of Arkansas. The acts of clemency benefited the stepson of a staff member, murderers who worked at the governor’s mansion, a rock star and inmates who received good words from their pastors. … During his years as governor, Huckabee granted clemency an average of about once every four days.” (Andrew DeMillo, “Huckabee Pardons Under Scrutiny,” The Associated Press, 12/10/07)
Gov. Huckabee Said That His Goal Was Not To Lock Up Criminals. Gov. Mike Huckabee: “It’s not our goal to just lock people up. … It is our goal to unlock their hearts, minds and souls so while they’re here they can learn the skills that most of us take for granted.” (Traci Shurley, “Work Starts On Site For Parole Violators,” Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 8/9/03)
“As His Reputation For Granting Clemency Spread, Applications Surged.” “But in a small though significant number of cases, he commuted prison sentences for murderers and other violent criminals over the pleas of victims’ families, prosecutors and judges. And as his reputation for granting clemency spread, applications surged.” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07)
Clemencies Rose Because The Next Governor Might Not Be As Lenient As Gov. Huckabee. “‘We had tons of them,’ said Cory Cox, who worked for several years as Mr. Huckabee’s aide in charge of clemency matters. ‘People, they’d call and say, “Please, let the governor look at this. We don’t know who the next governor is going to be.”‘” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07)
“The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Found That Nearly One In 10 Who Received Clemency From Governor Huckabee Were Later Sentenced To Prison.” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07) Gov. Huckabee Would Not Give Reasons Why He Granted Clemency:
Gov. Huckabee Would Not Detail Why He Granted A Clemency. “As for Mr. Huckabee’s refusal to detail his reasons for granting clemency, Mr. Cox said that was intended to prevent other petitioners from mimicking successful arguments.” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07)
So, There Has Been Much Speculation On The Reasons For Clemencies:
“Prosecutors say Huckabee was more inclined to release or reduce the sentences of prisoners if he had direct contact with them or was lobbied by those close to him.” (Andrew DeMillo, “Huckabee Pardons Under Scrutiny,” The Associated Press, 12/10/07)
“‘It seems to be true at least anecdotally that if a minister is involved, (Huckabee) seems likely to grant clemency,’ prosecutor Robert Herzfeld said in 2004 after successfully battling the then-governor over the release of a killer.” (Andrew DeMillo, “Huckabee Pardons Under Scrutiny,” The Associated Press, 12/10/07)
“Questions are being raised about then-Gov. Huckabee’s 2004 decision to grant clemency to a repeat Driving While Intoxicated offender in Arkansas named Eugene Fields, despite the objections of a law enforcement official at the time. Documents obtained by NBC News reveal Fields’ case was handled differently from any other DWI clemency or pardon granted by Huckabee, and some Republicans are now suggesting significant political contributions may have influenced the governor’s decision.” (Amna Nawaz, ” DWI Clemency/Donations Spur Questions,” NBC News’ First Read)
Elaine Colclasure, co-leader of the Central Arkansas chapter of Parents of Murdered Children, a victims’ advocacy group: “He doesn’t want anyone questioning anything he does. And when you do, he bristles. His compassion is for the murderer and any criminal who says he has found Jesus.” (Adam Nossiter and David Barstow, “Charming and Aloof, Huckabee Changed State,” The New York Times, 12/22/07)
Gov. Romney Issued Detailed Clemency Guidelines, Declaring It Should Be Exercised Only Rarely:
Gov. Romney Declared That Clemency Should Only Be Granted “Under The Most Rare And Extraordinary Circumstances.” “The Governor views the granting of executive clemency as an act of grace and not merely a remedy, which should be only awarded under the most rare and extraordinary circumstances. Because a grant of executive clemency has the effect of eradicating a lawfully obtained Massachusetts conviction or reducing a properly imposed sentence, the granting of executive clemency should not be viewed as a routine post-conviction remedy.” (Office Of Governor Mitt Romney, “Executive Clemency Guidelines,” 4/22/03)
“In Granting Executive Clemency, The Governor Neither Questions The Propriety Of A Court Proceeding Or Disposition, Nor Does He Substitute His Judgment For That Of The Courts.” (Office Of Governor Mitt Romney, “Executive Clemency Guidelines,” 4/22/03)
In His Four Years As Governor, Romney Denied All Requests For Pardon And Commutation. “During the four years Romney was in office, 100 requests for commutations and 172 requests for pardons were filed in the state. All were denied. ‘Governor Romney’s view is that it would take a compelling set of circumstances to set aside the punishment and guilt resulting from a criminal trial,’ said Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom… ‘The power to pardon should only be used in extraordinary circumstances.’” (“Romney Touts Record Of Never Granting Pardons,” The Associated Press, 6/12/07)
As President, Gov. Romney Would Also Lay Out Clear Guidelines On Clemencies. GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “One of the awesome powers granted by the Constitution to the executive is the power to pardon. I believe the power to pardon should be used in only the most narrow of circumstances, when the facts of a particular case are so compelling that the punishment and guilt should be set aside. In the recent past, pardon power has been used much more broadly. Bill Clinton abused this power to forgive criminal offenses that in my view were not deserving of clemency. Just as I did as Governor, I pledge as President to have a clear set of written, published guidelines setting out under what conditions pardons and commutations will be considered. Victims and their families will have an opportunity to be heard. Justice is not served when pardons and commutations are granted in an arbitrary or capricious manner.” (Gov. Mitt Romney, Statement, 12/31/07,/b>)
After taking a day and a half off from campaigning to film anti-Romney attack ads, Mike Huckabee has decided not to air them. In a strange turn of events in which he held a news conference to unveil the new ads, he decided to announce that he would not. Some members of his staff were no even aware of the change, as the billboards were still up as he appeared on stage. He still showed the attack videos to the reporters and supporters gathered at the news-conference.
Some in the media will say that this is a honorable, wise move on his part, and likely to define him as an above the fray type of candidate. This move definitely shows his indecisiveness, and lack of focus. He likely has ran out out of money, and was advised not to spend what little cash remained on a flailing last minute drive. You can view more commentary on this surprise move at the NY times political blog. Jonathan Martin of Politico offered the following:
That Huckabee still showed the spot to dozens of reporters jammed into a press conference will ensure the most skeptical, bordering on cynical, coverage on every national news broadcast tonight and in all the major national papers tomorrow. After it became clear that he was not going to air the ad on Iowa television, but would still preview it here, the press corps offered a collective laugh in plain recognition of what Huckabee was up to.
Viral copies of the ad are circulating the web, and it is becoming obvious that this was Huckabee’s intent all along. They likely had no money to air the aid and figured the media would do it for them. The backlash from this should be huge, as I am sure the reporters do not like being played for fools.
Is this the end of Mike Huckabee’s bid, or will it yield him positive results? With only one real day of campaigning left who’s strategy will prevail?
