Has Mitt Romney’s early state strategy made him the real GOP Presidential front-runner?

Vic, I can’t for the life of me consider Romney the front runner as long as Giuliani is polling in the top two in South Carolina. Until he dislodges the pro choice, pro amnesty, and pro gun control Giuliani from the top two, he is not the front runner. Nonetheless Romney has breathlessly enhanced his standing in the other early states beyond anyones’ including his own expectations at this stage. This boles well for him going forward. I think the thing to look for is for Romney to take on Giuliani decisively in the next debate on not only sanctuary cities but on abortion. I think this last debate before Thompson participates is his only opportunity to take Giuliani on on abortion and to really cement his pro-life credentials so that he can credibly run ads on him being pro-life (which will John McCain Giuliani’s candidacy). I think a comment along the lines of the “the GOP should always be the party that stands for life. And our nominee should be pro-life. I am pro-life and I will always stand for life!” This is a declarative statement and will immediately put Giuliani on the defensive and put to rest any notion Romney is wishy washy on the question of abortion. His best opportunity is in the next debate, because Thompson certainly stands ready to take the mantle of pro-life candidate.

Steve, great comment! I agree mostly. Great advice.

However, I do believe that Romney is where he had planned to be and that he is not surprised by his stature in the early states. He is hitting on all cylinders as planned.
