There are so many people who honestly believe that this guy is the best hope for the future. It just further shows that what you believe is not always what you get. He is much different in person than he is on TV. I can’t believe he made his debut like this. He drove around in a cart, took frequent breaks, and when he finally did talk, made a couple inane statements. Even Hillary walked through the crowds. This just shows that Fred doesn’t care about making the effort. Every actual candidate bought food and spent a few hours talking to people. Not Fred. He actually said he would push to overturn Roe V Wade??? So much for federalism. His entire platform (if you can call it a platform) is built on the claim that he is a federalist. What a disappointment.
You are right that Roe not existing would be in line with federalism principles, but a president pushing his own agenda to become law is not. If the Supreme Court were to eventually decide that it was unconstitutional, then yes, it would allow states natural federalism power. I don’t want a Presidential candidate charging forward to cause Roe to be overturned. The courts should allow the people to decide; the President has no business in such matters. It is one thing to say that you believe Roe is a bad law–but to say that you will get it struck down is something completely different.
Good insight. However, I disagree that the goal to overturn Roe is necessarily contrary to federalism. Certainly all presidents have specific ideas in mind when they nominate a new SC Justice. So, while trying to influence a current court is unprincipled, picking Justices that you believe would overturn Roe if a similar issue arose is fine. It happens w/ever nomination.
Moreover, the law established by Roe clearly hurts federalism. It transfers power from the states to the federal government. Getting rid of Roe would give that power back to the states. Your argument is important because it explains that Fred’s approach is bad for the balance of powers between the Executive and Judicial. However, I don’t think your complaint is strongly tied to federalism. As I understand it, federalism deals w/state v. fed issues, not branch 1 fed v. branch 2 fed.
Slick-Willy, you are correct, my complaint is not strongly tied to federalism. I am not claiming to be a federalist, good old Fred is. I don’t happen to believe appointing justices simply to overturn Roe, or any law is appropriate. I think republicans complain so much about activist judges legislating from the bench, that doing what Thompson proposes would be the ultimate hypocrisy. Presidents don’t make laws. If you appoint good men and women to the court and they just so happen to rule Roe unconstitutional, then so be it. Thompson is just trying to tickle the base with sound-bites and I believe he would is a poor choice for the Presidency.
Do you think Fred thought about how riding around in a golf cart would look to the people? Good Grief! How can you connect with the voters, how can you shake hands with people? It is easier than walking for sure! Did he want to just ride around and wave like a celebrity or something? This just makes him appear like he doesn’t want to be in touch with the people. It doesn’t help the lazy image either! Also, why was he able to speak with out getting in trouble because he is only “exploring a candidacy’? I trust him less everyday and do not feel that he will be willing to do the hard work that a President must do.
Fred……..don’t announce save yourself some work.
Its a shame when a candidate Like Mitt Romney or RON PAUL and their suppoters can’t have the confidence in themselves and their respective candidates to say positive things about themselves, all they can do is attack attack and CHILDISHLY attack their opponents.
When they attack their opponents for the same things they do themselves, wel that just proves the only level they can rise to is hypocrisy!

MITT GET OUT OUT BEORE ITS TOO LATE AND YOU STILL HAVE FEW BUCKS OF YOUR MULTI-BILLION$$$$$ FORTUNE LEFT!!!!!
Mitt Romney is a disgrace to himself, his family, his church and the REPUBLICAN PARTY!
31% against NO competition! Buy it and call it a VICTORY!!!!!!!
Just like he thought he could buy evangelical christians with that phony ront organization he set up!
Mitt you can’t be true to anyone or anything else when you spend all the time lying to yourself!
You are a flaming liberal and you know it. Now that you want the keys to the kingdom you will say anything, and throw your money at anyone to get what you want.
Your supporters are just as phony as you, criticizing another candidate for the very things you do yourself.
If HILLARY CLINTON is elected President, the REAL DAMAGE you and your supporters are doing to the Republican Party will be a big part of the reason.
Do the hnorable thing and just go home and roll around in your
M O N E Y.
It’s the only thing that REALLY matters to you and it shows.
Wow, John james Terry, you are what my mother would call a sour-puss. Are you a detailed-micro-manage-political-zealot? If it makes you sleep better at night knowing that a person that rode in a golf cart is not worthy to be deemed a candidate for President. I hope you have not succumbed to such a new low that all that matters to you in this crucial election - and at the crossroads of our Constitution - is to knit pick on someone riding a golf cart.
Help me out if I am wrong, but the last time I checked, there were numberous other issues facing our nation with more gravity than a golf-cart rider.
I would rather spend my time talking about the “real” issues of our day, namely, Iraq, Illegal-Immigration, domestic and economical. I believe that these issues will determine the outcome of the next President, not a golf-cart rider…………………
You know there are a whole lot of us REAL people out here, with REAL lives, REAL families, with REAL concerns about REAL issues like NATIONAL SECURITY, THE ECONOMY, and PRESERVING INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY.
And we will use our REAL brains to make a REAL choice or President and it won’t be a phony-baloney billionaire like Mitt Romnay who campaigns for President by attacking another candidaate for riding arund in a golfcart at the Iowa State Fair, when he himself was riding around the SAME IOWA STATE FAIR IN A GOLFCART HIMSELF!!!!
The Fredheads are trying to make themselves out to be more people than they really are. Several of the comments are coming from identical IP addresses, and they all are linking to the same article. Seems like a coordinated attack coming from 1 or two people.
I’ve allowed for a lot of baseless anti-romney rhetoric to go on on this thread.
I will allow it to stay. These “vicious attacks” against Fred Thompson are nothing like you have done in your comments against Romney. Any more and thread will be deleted. I mainly refer to you TDGIROIR and LisaD, and Dan Ames(who happen to be the same person).
I will ask everyone in BOTH parties to be more civil in your comments.
This is not an official blog, so your comment about Romney attacking others is completely baseless. Note also that this blog did not say that Fred was lazy because he rode around in a golf cart, but that was said by commenter who has nothing to do with this blog or Romney’s campaign.
You are blowing up about a comment from a single person not even related to Romney or his campaign. It’s time you drop it and quit spamming this thread with pointless arguments. You’ve pushed it too far, trying to make others believe you are multiple people. You’ll be deleted and banned if you continue.
Nate,
I’m somewhat on the fence, leaning towards Thompson, but considering Romney. However, this site has taken some unfair shots at Thompson when I have visited earlier in the summer, namely on his wife and a photo of her. Granted, you can go to Redstate or freerepublic and see similar treatment from Thompson supporters, however, you don’t see a lot on blogs for electing Thompson. Most of the ones I read don’t regularly call out other candidates. I’m sure there are some out there, but most of them seem pretty fair.
Fairly written Jon. I agree. I don’t have absolute control over this blog though. I do some administration, mostly monitoring comments, but writers are allowed to post what they will. I have never written anything on Fred Thompson, nor intend to. If he is going to fade, like some bloggers have written, then it is not necessary to even mention him. But others have different view points.
I would advocate that this be a more ‘pro-romney’ blog and focus on his strengths rather than focusing on the weakness in others.
My initial comment was to the people who were attacking and demeaning Fred Thompson. I was trying to make a point. Fred Thompson wasn’t the only candidate to ride in a golf cart but he was the only one being mocked for it. It wasn’t meant to be used as a means to attack or demean Mr. Romney in anyway. Overturning Roe v Wade would be 100% in line with federalism principles.
