Thompson’s Bad Evening

July 7th, 2007 Posted in 2008, F. Thompson

Yesterday, the AP reported here that former Senator and Lobbyist Fred Thompson will not disclose his fundraising for his quasi-campaign for the Presidency. It seems to me that this is an obvious sign that they have fallen well below their goal of $5 million.

Less than two hours later, the AP dropped this little bombshell:

The Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site that Thompson was retained by National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association to lobby the administration of President George H.W. Bush to ease a regulation that prevented clinics that received federal money from offering any abortion counseling.

You can find the entire article here.

The entire Thompson campaign seems to be based on two ideas: that there is this huge “draft” movement out there and the ridiculous notion that Thompson would be the only “real” conservative in the race. This two stories destroy these myths. If there were a huge grassroots movement for Thompson they would have raised enough money to release the total rather than hiding behind FEC laws. And if Thompson were the “pure” conservative in the race then I don’t think he would have been profiting from working on behalf of abortionists back in the early 1990’s.

I have told everyone I know that the Thompson campaign is a totally media driven event. The MSM is determined to have drama and trauma all the way to Nov. 8. If front runner starts to appear (i.e. Romney) they will do everything in their power to prevent anyone from moving ahead. If the nominations get settled early what will all the useless talking heads do with themselves? There is no other way to explain the so called “groundswell” of support for a mediocre retired Senator and so so actor with a bimbo wife. In a few months watch the MSM try to explain how the Senator “blew”it in the first few months of his campaign. It will be very sad…

  2. SGS Says:

The spokeman for Fred Thompson’s pre-campaign claimed that this is false, as Fred has no recollection of ever work for this company. The same agency also cannot produce the receipt or contract that Fred ever work for them. So, this MAY BE all hot air.

I am not saying whether this article is true or not; I just want to ensure the readers are aware of the respond from Thompson team.

Oh, sorry. I overlooked that the respond from Thompson team is already mentioned in a post before this one. It is here:

Never mind my comment. This is better.

SGS: In a speech to the Young Republicans today, FT did not deny the charges when asked about it directly. Here is what is reported about it at the URL below:

Thompson gave an oblique response when asked about the matter, first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

“I’d just say the flies get bigger in the summertime. I guess the flies are buzzing,” said Thompson, who is considering running for president as a social conservative. He refused comment on whether he recalled doing the work.

The only “draft” that is happening is the draft we all feel as these candidates and their staffs exit the race.

When I consider a candidate, the first thing I do is examine his or her stands on the issues. Then I consider their character and the way they treat their own families. Next is their record of service to their country and their party.

FT doesn’t pass muster on the service aspect. I know he has campaigned for some Republican candidates, but I am not aware of any extensive activity in this area.

I don’t think he has ever developed a “base” from which to lauch a successful campaign. And as these candidates are discovering, the MSM is not a base.
