Update from Jeff Fuller:

That’s two polls in a row that show Romney in double digits in South Carolina.

This ARG poll from last week had him at 10%.

Interesting stuff going on . . . but, once again, the trends are consistently positive for Romney.

It’s also nice that “Undecided” is winning. Romney stands to gain a lot of ground among folks who are open to finding the best candidate.

This is very good news. I have been more than a little worried about MR’s S. Carolina numbers up until now. Although he looks to be very well positioned in Iowa and New Hampshire, S. Carolina’s numbers had not moved much until the McCain/Kennedy Immigration Bill caused a political earthquake. Now it looks much better for Team Romney in the Palmetto State.

Although there is still a lot to be done, nice to see Romney gaining traction in all early states.

It was only about 2 weeks ago when I commented on a blog site that Mitt should go to the extreme by grab up those who are not satisfied with McCain’s recent activity on the immigration bill, and then bunked down. As long as he is in the top 3 for SC’s primary, he will be ok. He then should start to expand into other major states like California, Florida and Texas. It will be nice if this motion after a few weeks of no changes is due to his finally breaking through the “Mormonism Factor”. But I still think it is McCain Factor. However, it is good that he is moving upward, and I hope he would not need to bunk down anytime soon.

Romney has to win South Carolina. No republican candidate for president has won the nomination without winning South Carolina. It’s more important for Romney to increase his support now in South Carolina ahead of the entry of Fred Thompson. Thompson candidacy is a real candidacy, though I suspect that Fred Thompson is running to be the undisputed vice presidential candidate for one of the top three. I think Thompson’s candidacy tightens the noose around McCain’s neck, as long as Romney can maintain his early leads in Iowa and New Hampshire. Unfortunately, as much as Thompson’s candidacy will mean the demise of McCain, it can spell the demise of Romney as well, if he is unable to win South Carolina due to Thompson. I believe the biggest barrier to Romney’s ascension in South Carolina is really his lack of campaigning there (though he has descent organization down there from all accounts), his lack of a clear proposal on immigration (why not say explicitly he will veto the current bill and promise to build the fence?), and not addressing the Mormon issue in a JFK style speech to reassure evangelical voters about the influence of Mormonism on his presidency. What evangelicals will not tolerate is the “mainstreaming” of what is deemed a fringe sect of Christianity. As long as Romney makes a distinction between Mormonism and Christianity and reassures evangelicals of no intention to legitimize Mormonism, he will see more support in the South. I still maintain that the real remaining factor in my support/ non-support of Romney is how he does in South Carolina. I believe that if Romney is not able to really run on an aggressive conservative reform agenda (i.e. a major tax cut or reform of entitlements), I think he has to address the Mormon issue JFK style to gain support.
