Since we mentioned the French election results a week or so ago, I felt this deserved some mention as well.

LONDON (AP) — Tony Blair formally endorsed Gordon Brown Friday to be prime minister — the first time he has offered support for the British treasury chief’s bid for the office.

“I’m absolutely delighted to give my full support to Gordon as the next leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister and to endorse him fully,” Blair said, the day after announcing he would step down as Labour Party leader on June 27.

Blair offered the endorsement while speaking at Downing Street following talks with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Blair praised Brown’s success in managing Britain’s economy, which is experiencing a period of unprecedented prosperity.

“He has shown in his exemplary management of the economy … that he has the strength, judgement and experience to make a great Prime Minister,” Blair said in his endorsement. “I know he wants to drive modernization of the country forward to meet the challenges of the coming decade.”

From a purely personal standpoint this kind of excites me, because Gordon Brown’s son has Cystic Fibrosis, and hopefully it will raise awareness of the disease in a big way.
