Judith Nathan Discloses 4th Husband

FRIDAY HUMOR?

Today is a slow news day I think. Or maybe just a boring news day?

At a press conference in New York, Ms. Nathan appeared before the media with Mr. Giuliani by her side as she revealed her marriage to the former Massachusetts governor.

“In addition to being married to Rudy, I am also married to Mitt,” she told the press, “I guess I kind of forgot.”

While recognizing that her disclosure could complicate Mr. Giuliani’s bid for the G.O.P. nomination, she added, “I truly appreciate the love and support of my husband – and of my other husband, too.”

GOP’s Best Pro-Growth Candidate?

The Wall Street Journal today in the print edition (p. A14) in the Op/Ed section is an article by Kimberly Strassel. In it she asks the rhetorical question, “Who is the real, Reagan deal?” for supply side economics.

The article is very good and covers the top three well. [If the link below does not work, just do a search on “Kimberly A. Strassel” and go to today’s “Opinion Journal” — it is free. Since mine comes up through a subscription, it may not allow you to link through below.]

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY:

“The guy with the momentum is former entrepreneur and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. He’s signed an anti-tax pledge, bemoaned excessive regulation, called for cheaper energy with domestic drilling, and laid out (in detailed Power Point presentations) the coming fiscal disasters that are Social Security and Medicare. He took another plunge yesterday, unveiling a broad-strokes tax agenda.

. . . he laid out a marker for the field, calling for lower marginal tax rates, a more competitive corporate tax and the end of the death tax. This isn’t necessarily a surprise, given Mr. Romney’s economic team is largely made up of the Bush tax-cut brain trust, including former Council of Economic Advisers chief Glenn Hubbard, his successor, Greg Mankiw, and Brian Reardon. Mr. Romney also scored a coup with economist John Cogan, who knows budgets inside-out, and is a tax-cutter to boot.

What attracted many of these economists to the Romney team was the former governor’s success, in a liberal state, of beating back big-tax proposals and instead choosing to erase deficits by hacking away at spending. Mr. Romney’s challenge will now be in convincing economic conservatives that his tax plan, and other pro-growth talk, is more than just election rhetoric. In particular, he’ll need to do some explaining about his Massachusetts health-care plan, which Mr. Romney touted as a market-based reform, but was more about new government regulation.”

SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN:

“What’s missing is a serious tax-cutter. This may be understandable, given Mr. McCain has never shown much evidence he believes in supply-side economics. He was one of three Republicans to oppose the 2003 Bush tax cuts, and did so with class-warfare language to make Ted Kennedy proud. He’s also voiced his openness to Social Security tax hikes, and his opposition to getting rid of the death tax. Mr. McCain’s tack, in 2000 and now, is that the road to smaller government runs through spending cuts.”

MAYOR RUDY GIULIANI:

” . . . the former mayor will need something to convince conservatives he’s pro-growth genuine.”

I just wanted to plug my other site again. Over there I’m trying to gather a list of ways people can get involved in Mitt’s campaign. I also maintain a calendar of upcoming campaign events, should you want to know where Mitt will be. There is also an up-to-date list of online polls if you want to help Mitt by voting.

I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Remarks at the Club for Growth

“Liberals urged me to raise taxes, but I knew that the solution to a budget deficit is not to find ways to raise more revenue; it is to cut spending. So I eliminated and combined duplicative and wasteful agencies and programs. That laid the groundwork for what followed: four years of balanced budgets. One commentator said that I didn’t just go after the sacred cows, I went after the whole herd. And when I left office, Massachusetts had 600 fewer state workers than when I took office.”

Commentary from Ramesh Ponnuru with which I largely agree. Of all the Republican candidates, Mitt has the most concrete economic platform. However, it’s still missing something that would cause people to rally around him. What do you think?

VP

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Thursday dropped some names of potential running mates in the 2008 race, adding that such speculation was premature.

Among those Romney mentioned for the second slot on the Republican ticket were three Southerners: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

In Keeping with the Theme of My Last Post…

In keeping with the theme of my last post, I urge those Romney supporters who have not yet made a contribution to do so now. If you only contribute a small amount it will be well worth my time writing this post.

If you are like me it may seem that you’ll never be able to afford to make the large donation that you’re hoping to. Don’t wait until then but start now by making a small donation and repeating it each month. Stretched over time it will seem like nothing but in the end it will add up to a substantial amount.

The deadline for this quarter is March 31, 11:59 PM. Help the Romney campaign get a last minute boost that will show the strength of his campaign and his supporters!

Donate now by clicking here!

For the fundraiser name and ID you may use mine, Nathan Gunderson #696000, or that of the founder of this wonderful blogsite, Ann Marie Curling #250001.

It’s an investment in a better America.

Addendum: If you want to get involved in fundraising and are willing to put forth the time and effort to do so, get your own fundraiser ID# to collect funds on behalf of the campaign by clicking this link.

Conference Call with Mitt Romney

Earlier this afternoon (1:30PM MST) I took the opportunity to participate in a conference call with Governor Romney. Invitations to join the call were sent to volunteer fundraisers via e-mail. I had no idea what to expect so I called the number and entered my participant code. The highlight for me was speaking with Governor Romney (meaning I asked a question and listened to his answer). For me that’s exciting because it’s the closest I’ve ever come to meeting him. (My previous claim to Romney fame was my sister riding in an elevator with him once.) More on talking with him later.

After a short wait on the phone the listeners were greeted by Mitt Romney who first graciously thanked us for our efforts on his and Ann’s behalf. He said he was in South Carolina earlier today in a few meetings that turned out very well. He was now in Florida. With him were Spencer Zwick (National Finance Director) and Alex Gage (Senior Strategist). Alex Gage had the first go at addressing us, MR followed, and then Spencer Zwick.

Alex Gage:
-Funds raised thus far were being used to concentrate on key primary states, namely: IA, NH, FL, and SC.
-Polls have been very volatile recently
-Romney does not enjoy the same recognition as the other two top candidates and funds were vital to helping him become better known
-Romney typically polls at 5% -15% in national polls though he has done very well in a recent NH poll as well as an IA poll

Governor Romney:
-The campaign and fundraising is going very well and we are very much “on the ground in key states”
-Recently raised $1 million in a fund raising event (he said where, but I don’t recall)
-”No one out organizes us”
-”I like our position.” Stated something to the effect that though he had low name recognition he would not trade his position because with time and funds he will be able to prove himself.
-”Right now money is king.” With the fundraising primary next week we have a great opportunity to show the strength of the campaign. Substantiated fundraising will be necessary to carry the campaign through the summer and fall.
-Thanks again for providing service.

Spencer Zwick:
-End of first quarter fundraising only hours away
-Make last effort to try to get one more person to donate at least $1000 (at this point I’m a little embarrassed because I realize how little I’ve raised so far. To be honest almost nothing, but I’ve tried and have great ambitions).
-Explained a little about a new form attached to the e-mail we received for taking donations by credit-card over the phone.
-Stated that we would receive another e-mail invitation to a conference call (early next week??) to let us be the first to know what the fundraising total for the quarter was before it was released to the media. It could have been Romney that said this, I’m not sure.
-We have time for a few questions, press STAR-1 if you want to ask a question. (I pressed it immediately.)

Mitt Romney spoke again but I didn’t catch what he said because the moderator cut in telling me to state my question when prompted. I expected the question to be screened like when calling in to a radio station. I had no idea I was speaking live to the whole conference call. You can imagine my surprise when I ended and Mitt Romney began answering my question directly! I’m pretty sure I came across as bumbling.

The questions:
#1 (mine): When we have the next conference call, and they let us know the first quarter fundraising numbers, should we wait before posting it on a blog until the media receives the numbers?

Mitt Romney replied that it would be fine since the media would have them very shortly after we did. He said much more than this but I was still dumbfounded that I was talking to him live and don’t recall much more.

#2: “I was just curious, how are we doing in terms of fundraising compared to other candidates?

MR: “The latest is… we don’t know.” He said some more about numbers and polling percentages that I don’t recall but added some thoughts regarding Hillary. I think he said she might earn the most because she has the roll of an almost inevitable nominee and may enjoy the vast fundraising potential that comes with it - similar to how George W. Bush did in 2004. He said he had heard she may get as much as $40 million but he didn’t believe that it was likely.

#3: “Is it true that Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. has endorsed McCain for President and if so how does that affect the Romney campaign?

MR: “Yes it’s true, though that happened quite awhile ago, sometime back in June or July.” Romney went on to say that this did not worry them and he pointed out the fact that Governor Huntsman’s father, Jon Huntsman Sr., was a co-chair on Romney’s Nation Finance Committee.

That’s the full scoop to the best of my knowledge.
