In light of Mr. Novak’s piece this week, I feel that we should harken back to a blog I wrote last year about this very subject.

Dear Mr Romney,
I am a United States Veteran who went through, what ended up being a 4 yr substance abuse program, through the Bedford VA.I recently signed on as a supervisor,(contractor for the Dept of Veteran Affairs)to supervise recovering veterans, and help them achive competitive employment.I have in the past, received a few DUIs before getting sober in 2002.One of which
was in the state of RI. in 2000. Upon trying to renew my MA.license,I was told to take care of the incedent in RI in order to renew my license,(that was active).
After taking care of everything in RI,I was told by a Trial Officer in Worcester Ma. That I may lose my license for a period of 10 yrs due to Melanies Law.I have changed my life in so many ways to get where I am Today.I work with Veterans who trust my judgment.I would like you to consider these facts, and maybe try to be understanding and help me
through this prosess.
I totally belive in Melanies Law, and commend you on getting it in to effect, however I am a person who is getting affected by the law that in my opinion is not warranted.
The fact that I was what I was should not be a life long sentence.
I have been sober for a number of years,,not because I was court odered, but because my time has come to surrender.
Thank You,
William Barr
