Romney urges GOP to resolve ethical, spending problems

January 9th, 2006 Posted in Fiscal Discipline, News Articles

In this article from The Boston Globe, it tells of Mr. Romney’s calls for “high-level resignations so it can move past the “ethical scandal” surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff.” This is definitely one thing that sets Mr. Romney apart from other republicans in that he has a squeaky clean record when it comes to ethics. Later in the article he also chided Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska for his $223 bridge project to an island of 50 inhabitants. “I understand Congress is reluctant to give up the power it has to allow individual members and potentially influential lobbyists to insert wasteful, unnecessary projects into key pieces of legislation that the country needs,” Romney said.

Romney’s willingness to address unethical conduct and wasteful spending are two of his best selling points for me. He is the best candidate to do these things because: (1) he’s a Washington outsider, (2) he has a reputation to cleaning up corruption as he did with the 2002 Olympic Games, and (3) his business acumen points to his wise use of company’s capital.

Mitt lost my vote this week. I am a independent voter, always voting repulican. It is a total disgrace how recent events have been exploited by Mitt and his party regarding the Murphy family of Southborough.

    You loose in 2008!

Mike: I suppose you are refering to this story: http://www.masslive.com/news/topstories/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1136537464208340.xml&coll=1

I gather that Reilly wanted to keep the media out of it in respect for the family. He said that he did not put an end to the police investigation. Yet, the police investigation was not allowed to proceed due to the DA Conte’s refusal.

And Mitt Romney was upset about it. I don’t feel that I have enough info from that article to say whether Romney was right to be upset or not. If he was upset that the police investigation was not being able to proceed (i.e., that evidence was being “hushed up”), then I think Romney was completely in the right. I highly doubt that Romney was upset because the situation was not allowed to go to the media. Maybe he thought Reilly had something to do with the stonewalling of the investigation.

What makes you think Romney was exploiting this family’s tragedy?

I am Republican and it was hard for me to believe that it was only Repulican’s involved. But since reading Rich Lowry’s article in National Review, found online at

, I decided that I still doubt it is only Republicans but it seems mainly their problem. I applauded Gov. Mitt Romney’s call to clean up before I read this, but now even more so.

Wilber has as much a chance of being elected president as does Gary Bauer. He needs to keep his pretty mop in MA and the local Mormon temple cuz Mitty ain’t going anywhere.
