Latter-day President? A Romney Story at The Opinion Journal of the Wall Street Journal

In this candid review of Mr. Romney and his chances in 2008, the Opinion Journal gives a fair analysis as well as a personal view of the man who I believe will be our next President.

A Mitt Romney candidacy would test the religious right.

BY JAMES TARANTO
Saturday, December 31, 2005 12:01 a.m. EST

BOSTON–Mitt Romney insists he has hardly thought about running for president: “That’s a decision you make way down the road.” With the 2008 election 1,039 days away, that’s fair enough. But I’m guessing he’ll run.

I first met Mr. Romney in September at New York’s Monday Meeting, a conclave of right-leaning movers and shakers who gather to hear politicians from around the country make pitches for support. This month, after it emerged that the backing Mr. Romney sought was not for re-election as governor of Massachusetts, I visited him at the Statehouse here. “I will accomplish in my term the objectives that I set out to accomplish, or some will be rejected and I wouldn’t get them done in the second term anyway,” he tells me. “There’s no reason to hang around and warm the chair, taking advantage of the perks and fun of office, if the agenda is complete.” What he doesn’t say is that there’s also no reason for a governor to risk defeat if he has his eye on the White House.

Democrats digging dirt early on Romney

Why lookie what we have here. The Democrats are already starting to dig dirt on Mitt Romney. Amazing seeing we’re so far out, this really shows something. They are already fearful of a Romney candidacy. Good work DNC.

You can read all the juicy details HERE at The Boston Globe .

Author’s Addition:
One main thing that I left out of this, that most certainly should have been included is the fact that the DNC is actually asking the state of Mass to waive the fees for this exercise. And the costs are going to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. I say, go ahead and let them have the information but they can pay for it themselves.

A Hugh Hewitt Interview with Governor Romney From July

December 27th, 2005 | 3 Comments | Posted in Media Appearances, Multimedia, Transcripts

Here is an interview of Mr. Romney from Hugh Hewitt this past July. I’d like to thank reader Ryan Knoll for pointing this out to me. I don’t know how I missed it, but it definitely is something that needs mentioning.

Wednesday, July 27

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in the news again.

The red governor in a blue state joined Hugh last night to discuss a stand he made in the abortion issue. Here’s what he and Hugh had to say:

HH: Governor Romney, big headlines about you in the Boston Globe today, and an opinion piece by you at the same time. And I wanted to check in on this. You vetoed a bill for emergency contraception/emergency abortion. You’ve come under fire from National Abortion Rights Action League and others on the left. Can you explain why you vetoed the bill, and your opinion piece earlier today?

MR: Well, it’s pretty straight forward, Hugh, and that is that many people speak about emergency contraception. But in fact, the drug that they’re referring to not only is a contraceptive, but it’s also an abortive product. And that is in individuals who’ve already become impregnated, and that have a living embryo within them, take this drug, and it will end the life of that embryo. So, it’s not only a contraceptive, it’s abortive. And I promised the people of Massachusetts I would not change Massachusetts abortion laws. Even though I am pro-life, I said I’d leave things where they are. And they can’t have it both ways, obviously. They can’t keep on saying they want to expand abortion laws. I believe in this case as well that because the product would be available to people under 18 without parental involvement, it would violate a very important principle. And that is when abortion occurs, young women under 18 should have the involvement of their parents in that decision.

Politicians search for the Web advantage - An Elect Romney in 2008 Mention!

December 27th, 2005 | 3 Comments | Posted in News Articles, Site News

I was interviewed for this story yesterday, and am publishing my portion of the article here, if you want to read the rest click on the link and head over to The Boston Globe.

As for Romney, his presidential aspirations have prompted friends and foes alike to take to the Web in novel ways.

One of them is 31-year-old Ann Marie Curling, a mother of four from Cadiz, Ky., who publishes a blog dedicated to getting Romney elected president in 2008 (blog.electromneyin2008.com).

Curling regularly mines the Internet for media stories on Romney, and she posts them — with her insights on why he’d make a good president — alongside a montage of photos of him and of the White House.

Curling, who says she has no ties to Romney, said yesterday that she has been involved with politics before and sees Romney as ”a breath of fresh air” whom she hopes to propel to Washington.

”I just want to jump on it early, because I’ve gotten involved in campaigns in the past and I’ve always gotten involved six months out,” she said in a telephone interview. ”I really want to take an active role this time.”

Curling, who runs a Web technology company with her husband, said she can track who visits her blog, and she reported getting a few hits a week from the governor’s office.

She said she also gets visitors from the Democratic National Committee, US Senate and House offices, various federal agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Commerce Department, and from people in the important presidential primary states of South Carolina, Iowa, and New Hampshire.

By Frank Phillips, Globe Staff | December 22, 2005

Governor Mitt Romney said yesterday that reports he has shifted to the political right to attract Republican primary voters are Boston media distortions, and emphasized that his positions are considered moderate on the national scene.

Lessons Learned from Security at Past Olympic Games - Mitt Romney’s Testimony To The Competition, Foreign Commerce, and Infrastructure Hearing in 2004!

December 18th, 2005 | 1 Comment | Posted in National Security

I am posting this so that those of you who don’t know Mr. Romney as well can see his commication style and intelligence. I feel that this is a very good example of the way he speaks, plus, it’ll show exactly what was done in terms of security during those Olympic Games back in 2002.

Chairman Smith, Senator Dorgan, Members of the Committee,

Thank you for inviting me to talk with you today about the unique security and public safety experience we had in Salt Lake as we prepared for and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. It’s an practice for the management of each Olympics to pass on to succeeding Games their “lessons learned” – both successes and mistakes. Although security and safety planning and implementation varies greatly from country to country depending on the structure of law enforcement, there are operational lessons that we learned in Salt Lake from those who came before us and there are pragmatic lessons that we have endeavored to pass on to those who come after. I appreciate the opportunity to share some of those with you today.

I am going to limit my comments today to a number of broad principles that were critical to our security planning and implementation. Mark Camillo, who led the federal public safety planning effort in his role as lead for the US Secret Service and can more appropriately address the operational aspects of the Salt Lake security and public safety plan.

This Times of London article by Tim Reid gives a glowing review of Mr. Romney and all his accomplishments from prior to the Olympics to his current position as Governor. A very good read.

Golden Mitt

December 17th, 2005 | No Comments | Posted in Analysis, Commentary, and Editorials

In an article reminiscent of this “warm and fuzzy” that I posted on October 30th. The National Review Online through CBS News talks about how Mr. Romney has the best shot of any Republican candidate at converting blue state California red in 2008. It’s really telling about Mr. Romney’s character and clean cut image.

Stay The Course, Mitt

December 17th, 2005 | No Comments | Posted in Analysis, Commentary, and Editorials, New Media

This article on the blog Hub Politics shows the complete hippocracy of the Boston Globe. Saying that Mr. Romney should step down because he’s not going to run for re-election. What kind of sense does that make? And the whole Kerry comparison is priceless. Mr. Romney has 1 1/2 yrs to finish up what he went there to do, I say let him do it!

If there is an area where Mr. Romney is the strongest it has to be money. If Mr. Romney doesn’t assend to the Presidency money or the lack thereof will not be the reason.

By Brett Arends
Boston Herald Finance Columnist

Friday, December 16, 2005

If Mitt Romney fails in a quest for the White House, it won’t be for lack of money.

The governor’s personal fortune, built up over two decades in management consulting and venture capital at Boston-based Bain & Co., is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

And that’s just the beginning.

By Kimberly Atkins
Friday, December 16, 2005

Gov. Mitt Romney’s out-of-state travels may have drawn jeers from state lawmakers, but he has a standing invitation from GOP high-ups nationwide, who say he brings clout in an important election year and has all the makings of a president.

Romney’s White House ambitions more than just a beltway pipe dream

This article from The Boston Globe highlights just how strong Mr. Romney is. And how he can use that strength in the tough Republican primaries that he’ll have to navigate through.

He’s definitely minded his p’s and q’s over the past several months to put himself in this position. Plus as the article states it’s Governors who have the best chance when running for Presidents, not Senators and others.

With his recognition in New Hampshire, and his vacation home there that will pay dividends handsomely as well.

BOSTON –His business savvy, chiseled good looks and Winter Olympics white knight resume propelled Mitt Romney to the top of the political heap in Massachusetts.

But how will “Matinee Mitt” play in Peoria? That’s the big question as yet another political son of Massachusetts ponders a run for the White House.

Romney, who said this week he is not running for re-election next year as governor, may not yet be on the same Republican A-list as a Rudy Giuliani or Sen. John McCain, but GOP political observers say don’t count him out.

Despite significant hurdles — from GOP suspicion about anyone who calls the Bay State home to lingering unease among some evangelical Christians about his Mormon religion — Romney is a candidate with the money, smarts and wherewithal to make a serious stab at the Oval Office.

One thing Romney has going for him is New Hampshire.
