Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a potential 2008 presidential candidate, will make his first Quad-City appearance next month at a Scott County Republican Party fund-raiser in Davenport.
Romney, who was elected governor in 2002, will join several potential White House hopefuls who have already made stops in Iowa.
He was in the state during July and also spent last year sprinkling cash donations among several Iowa political candidates, and not just the customary donations to congressional candidates. He also helped out at the local level, which is what earned him an invitation to the Scott County fund-raiser. Romney’s Commonwealth PAC gave the county party $1,000 last year.
“This PAC really helped us out,” said Susan Frazer, the party chairwoman. A Romney spokesperson did not return several calls from the Quad-City Times seeking to confirm his visit.
The fund-raiser will be at 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at Club Mo-kan, 4227 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport.
Over the weekend, Romney he was Michigan, speaking to Republican activists there. However, he did not give any signs whether he will run for president in 2008 or seek a second term as governor. His term expires next year.
“Sorry, no news,” he said, according to the Boston Globe newspaper.
The son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, Mitt Romney was the chief executive of the Salt Lake City, Utah, organizing committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics. In addition to being the governor, he also is vice chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association and will become chairman of the organization this fall.
Romney will be the second potential 2008 presidential candidate to visit the Quad-Cities this year. U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., visited Davenport in July.
